Topic: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

I was watching an old Miss Marple and heard this quaint nursery rhyme in the supporting musical score...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wdz1uidkc3w9ifp/Nursery_Rhyme_Sixpence.png?raw=1

I immediately picked out the notes on my iPad (P8) loving the app! And, this morning decided to have a go at something new for me - thickly textured chords (altered triads with 7th, 9ths, etc; chords based on 4ths and not 3rds as is the 'norm'; substitutions across the tri-tone; and a richer density - dare I say it? - jazzy feel.)

Here's a short taste of what I came up with

https://www.dropbox.com/s/98shl4xlaogifuq/Progression_Sixpence.png?raw=1

and here's what the progression sounds like (I strum the chords so I can hear all the inner voices and decide if I like them or not).

Why am I doing this? Well, I'm trying to improve my ear.

When I started to teach myself the piano at the tender age of 13, I would often pick out tunes quite readily and have a go at harmonising them with varying degrees of success. This led me to conclude that I needed to read music and sweated over the dots until I could read them fluently and play pieces at sight

Now many decades later, I can read the dots but feel I lack the ability to 'hear' as well as I'd like. My recent spate of mini-tunes and harmonies have been a progressive delving into this desired realm.

I completed this little exercise...

Re: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

Here's a simple (boring) tune I composed for the occasion...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6bq212scid48s7b/T-Augmented%20%28DEZ%202023%29.png?raw=1

I'm going to use it to explore the spicy Augmented triad on the organ (Vox and Pipe)

On the Vox (GSi Red Admiral):

On the Pipe Organ (OrganTeq):

I had a 'quick' look to see if this chord was used in classical music. It would appear so, but never featured prominantly as a proud triad in it's own glorious right! Please correct me if I'm wrong... and supply examples.

Now that I'm getting a flavour of it - I think I shall bask and shower in its potential more...

Great job you are doing DEZ. I like where this thread is going. Keep it up.

Thank you for the encouragement

I have in my possession a tome that should stop me from running before I can walk, called "Harmony by Walter Piston [Revised and Expanded by Mark DeVoto]" So far I've looked through it and my initial thoughts lie along the lines of "When am I going to find the time to truly absorb anything of value." I think I shall dip my toes in from time to time and keep experimenting as I have been doing.

If it sound's right, it can't be too far off from agreed practice. Though having said that, I do find what I liked about what I did yesterday is not always prevallent today.

Here's the OrganTeq harmony revisited - just love a reed stop on the pedals!

You're welcome DEZ.

I believe the Bach Chorales are good for learning harmony, just a thought.

Warmest regards,

Chris

Using a very well known English Nursery Rhyme..

Basic Harmony (Everything in root position, chords I, IV and V only)

Re: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

+1 for Bach chorales. One piece that really turned me on to the possibilities of harmony was Chopin's Prelude in E minor. It's not much of a melody, hardly anything at all, but wow, what harmony! Antonio Carlos Jobim used this prelude as a model for How Insensitive.

I think you may be right! Walter Piston is already introducing them and I'm only up to page 56...

Thanks again for the gentle nudge

Yes, it is a beautiful piece that requires a much softer left hand to allow the right hand to sing out mornfully. I suppose that I will have to analyse it at some point and kill it's magic - LOL It's not much of a melody, hardly anything at all, but wow, what harmony! Antonio Carlos Jobim used this prelude as a model for How Insensitive. Composers borrow from each other all the time - I can definately hear JS Bach's Sinfonia No.15 in Bm in the song Windmills of Your mind and Air On The G String in A Whiter Shade of Pale are two that readily come to mind.

Thanks for your input - it's very much appreciated.

If you've already downloaded the score it's now updated with the latest two delvings (each time I complete a new one I'll just upload a fresh copy to the same link):

Re: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

I'm enjoying my journey of discovery and share a small reharmonisation (see the second section in F)

Re: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

Continuing on my journey...

Here's my simplified (ie the rhythm has been stripped from the melody) transcription of Bob Miller (1895-1955) 's tune, "Rocking Alone In an Old Rocking Chair"

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ry624hrrk9ln8...9.pdf?dl=0

The reason for simplification is to study how the melody is enhanced by the chosen chords (well the one I chose - I think they're close enough) to convey the emotion of the words. Clever stuff I'm hoping to emulate one day in my own delvings.

You can hear many versions on YouTube from various artists. I recall when I first heard it as a child at my grandparents on a record by Micky & Griff; always liked it ever since.

Re: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

Listening to old TV Themes - I was intrigued by Jeff Darnell's composition for Dickson of Dock Green.

And here's what it sounds like as a duet played on the U4:

Re: [Ad] Ventures into Harmony

Here's an old pop song that once caught my imagination...

Here's the score:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/66hj8o3fhhnjt...9.pdf?dl=0

This is probably not out of copyright so there's no 'performance' - but for the sole purpose of harmonic analysis of a successful pop song you can see very little goes a long way. It's a pitty that the composer Joe Meek killed himself at a young age - pressures of the pop music industry I suppose...
