PtqEnthusiast’s Dance

Like every year, I make my own Contest compositions.

It's about wanting to dance/play with joy, with intensity, and to use unexpected sections in the music to keep the listener's full interest until the end of the dance (and maybe make the listeners burst out laughing some places).

Notice, that I`m using an ostinato accompaniment, left hand, repeated throughout my composition (like Chopin ”Raindrop Prelude”) sometimes slightly varied.
In my composition the ostinato is part of the rhythm that keep me dancing PtqEnthusiast’s Dance in this contest. Unfortunately I couldn't film my dance. I still have pain in my right knee

Instruments, Pianoteq 8:
Ptq Mistral, CP-80, Vibraphone VB Tremolo, Church Bells  and Organteq.

As a strong contrast to the ostinato (and to the whole composition) Organteq plays a short nice soft section alone, with a wonderful ”saxophone sound” - don’t need vintage from 1940 or a Selmer…..use Organsaxteq

Some people may like this music and others may say it's a complete flop. But it doesn't bother me at all - this is me, the happy experimenter, enjoying my own creativity     Can’t stop to experiment with Modartt instruments. Love it.
But I hope Ptq lovers can enjoy the music.

Thank you Modartt for the Contest.

And Good Luck to everyone !

This year I decided to make my own music in order to pray for peace in the world, especially, to pray for all innocent people.
I first tried to make the ending of a piece of music simply optimistic, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be possible yet.
I thank you all for your attention.

The film opens up with a glimpse of our tiny dancer warming up, then dissolves to the primary setting with piano and performer.

Featured prominently in this scene is Pianoteq on a large iPad Pro. Is Pianoteq for iOS finally here?

This is Pianoteq running on a Raspberry Pi 400, hooked up to a Kawai Novus NV10 with Millennium III grand piano action. Pianoteq features gloriously on the iPad via VNC, acting both as a piano visualizer and touch controller. This is mere luxury, since Pianoteq can be controlled directly from the Novus via dedicated MIDI control channel.

Although this is not a case of Pianoteq running on an iPad, it is arguably the superior setup for this scenario. The iPad is completely unencumbered with wires or interfaces. Meanwhile, thanks to performance optimizations in Pianoteq, the dedicated Raspberry Pi setup is doing all the heavy lifting, yet completely silent and out of sight.

It's hard not to be drawn to the piano roll powered by Simon Rodriguez's Reactive MIDI Visualizer. Remarkably, MIDI Visualizer is completely free, open source on GitHub, and features a no-nonsense yet powerful configuration interface. MIDI Visualizer also has alpha channel support, which can be used to create an augmented reality piano roll effect for a nice variation on the typical Rousseau and Kassia synthesia videos.

Bravo et merci à Simon.

The piano responds wonderfully, with superb playability on the grand action, and fabulous sound experienced via the Novus. The integrated woofer brings the bass to life. Pianoteq effortlessly models an Ant. Petrof while capturing the performance.

The next reveal is that the piano is not actually in equal temperament, but tuned to Kirnberger III. This is a risky choice on the part of the performer, though perhaps, the stakes are not so high. Sarah McLachlan famously recorded Last Dance on a random out-of-tune upright piano per the legendary Pierre Marchard, but here, the virtual piano has been very deliberately configured with a historical tuning employing technology that did not exist in 1997.

How easy would it be for your everyday pianist to tune an Ant. Petrof 275 acoustic grand to a historical temperament? It would be neither fun nor practical to tune an acoustic grand back and forth between different tunings. This is where Pianoteq shines, yet again.

Let's leave the technical praise aside and allow for some musical storytelling.

Our poor dancer collapses. She gets up gingerly and resumes a gentle dance. That was almost the end of her story.

Throughout the piece, the performer has been pedaling mercilessly and the virtual piano strings have been resonating, painting a rich musical tapestry. For a brief moment of Zen, that pedal is released, while the dancer reassesses.

Her life is meaningless without dance.

We take a moment to enjoy the deep bass of the Ant. Petrof and crystalline clarity of the treble. This even inspires our tiny dancer to improvise a few steps that were not quite part of the original choreography.

The ballerina grows bolder. She outdoes herself in what turns out to be her last hurrah. Her heart gives, she collapses, and never rises again.

She had always loved flowers.

End credits are shown. The performer reaches out and deliberately halts the piano simulation.

I had originally created a v1 video with the intention of entering it in the Pianoteq Video Contest 2022. V1 was disqualified by virtue of already being published and Modartt later broke the news that the contest was being delayed for Pianoteq 8. So I painstakingly remade this version with a reactive visualizer for an augmented reality piano roll effect and rebased everything from Pianoteq 7.5.4 to Pianoteq 8!

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2022 - entries

Hi everyone,

I am very excited to enter this year's video contest.

Here is my video: https://youtu.be/kVd66QLcJjE

Just a little bit of background about me; I started playing piano late March 2022 - I've always wanted to play, but I never got the chance to learn, until this year when I finally decided once-and-for-all to buy myself a keyboard piano with a few online courses.

Next, I wanted to record my songs so that I could post them on YouTube. I quickly realised recording high quality music requires hardware knowledge and it is a bit expensive.

So I searched for alternatives - looking at DAWs, watching YT videos, reading blogs - until I stumbled upon a YT video on Pianoteq 8 release. The timing couldn't have been better.

I am very happy to have stumbled upon Pianoteq as it has made my music sound amazing.

I wish everyone all the best and I can't wait to learn more, play more and get more involved in this community.

Thank you,
Walid

I played a short improvisation with Pianoteq 8's Classical Guitar and NY Steinway D sounds.

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2022 - entries

This is a very classical recording of Scarlatti Sonata in A major, K. 39.
Bluethner stays my favorite so far!

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2022 - entries

Great entries so far! Here's my (updated) contribution:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9eCfkKnLwE

I made some interesting Pianoteq patches and combined them into a live-loop improv. There are a couple of e-pianos and an upright that don't sound much like the original, as well as a classical guitar and Steinway D that I kept intact.

love to see everyone else's entries so far.  here's my submission, a solo performance of a great tune by Bill Evans, Waltz For Debby.  it's not the way this tune is usually performed but hopefully it's not too heretical   having a great time with PTQ 8, love this update!

I used the Piano K2 with the Warm preset, I really like this timbre because it reminds me of NORD`s pianos.

Michael Finnissy is a contemporary British composer often associated with the New Complexity movement.  For this year's contest, I selected the eighth of his 23 Tangos, subtitled For Colin Matthews -- a fiftieth birthday tribute.  This short piece is in two sections, the second marked Fulminato, which Google translates as Electrocuted, which suggested the video accompaniment.

My submission to the 2022 Modartt Video Contest!

https://youtu.be/EXtxD_tStr4

I originally wrote this in Pico-8 as an exercise in writing 2-part counterpoint. Lots of rhythmic and hand independence challenges when translating it to the piano. Many of the left hand rhythmic patterns are inspired by the pianist Egberto Gismonti.

Good luck everyone!

Recorded on my Roland LX706, MIDI out via USB, to Pianoteq 8. Here I'm using a modified version of the Steingraeber Bright preset, with some notes detuned, the hammer hardness tweaked a tiny bit, and the condition slider pulled back a tad.

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2022 - entries

Welcome to Organfall, where a spirited dose of church organ and a touch of grand piano evolve in a weathered cask of multiple reverbs. Part one is a descending quad-sequence founded on the principles of process music, while part two is a slow cinematic soundscape culminating in a tutti-full acoustic bouquet.

Instruments used: Organteq and Pianoteq (Modartt); sound effects: Desmodus and Ruina (Noise Engineering); performed in VCV Rack and Bitwig Studio (hosting, mixing, convolution reverb).

Thanks to Danie-Ailes for her inspired creative suggestions and to Dan Tilley for the image used at the end of the video.

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2022 - entries

Here is my entry, comparing PianoTeq v8 with v7 from a beginner perspective:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDhyLlO-q6Q

Let's compare a simple, beginner-level piece played by a beginner with both Pianoteq v8 and v7 to notice the differences.
Intentional dry sound, similar to the one people would select for practicing, no pedaling and no changes to the presets other than moving the condition slider to 0.21.

I wanted to also have a musical phrase by musical phrase comparison, but ffmpeg wanted to re-encode the whole thing each time, and that caused loss of quality, so I gave up on that, sigh.

Hi all, I am a new member and new-ish to Modartt and Pianoteq. Thank you to Modartt for this amazing product and I hope everyone enjoys my submission:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIH0OhqmwHA

The piece starts with the often omitted sectional/introductory verse to the song, and actual head of the tune is adapted mostly from Keith Jarrett's live version of it from Tokyo 1984. At the end I go into We Shall Overcome.

Hello everyone, I share you my entry for the contest of this year. It's not a complete piece or song, it's a set of demos and with those demos I try to prove that Pianoteq 8 is very versatile and it can be used in any musical genre. Enjoy it and happy holidays!

--- Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) ---
I created this for Pianoteq Video Contest 2022 based on a practice piece I had previously created myself.
I tried BOSS GP-10 MIDI conversion to see if I could take advantage of Pianoteq 8's "Classical guitar" and "Guitar mode. The guitar is a Morris Tornado ZII-HG with Roland GK-2A, strings are homastik-Infeld KR116, and the "Pinch Harmonic Pedal" is operated by a footswitch.
Editing in Cubase is 80-90% eliminating excess sounds, and the rest is correcting unstable sounds and adding sounds that could not be picked up. The upper row of the two piano rolls is before editing and the lower row is after editing.

Good Afternoon. In this video I make some arpeggios and a ragtime improvisation of the song happy birthday. I hope you enjoy. It's great to see some fine entries appearing again. Best wishes to all.

Well, I had planned to use one of my new sheet music projects as my competition entry this year, but it's not going to be ready in time. So here's a musical Christmas card! It's given me a chance to use the Celesta, which I haven't really played very much before. Hey, this thing's gorgeous, and I'm loving it! The Glockenspiel makes an appearance here too.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Thanks!  It's basically a spectrogram, with different colours superimposed for left and right channels, so the fuzziness and the shading comes from the stereo imaging.  Details of the software (a Linux command-line utility called ffmpeg), and links, are at the bottom of the video description on YouTube (you'll need to click "more").

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2022 - entries

I recorded an impromptu like piece from Schubert, which was composed in May 1828 probably on his brother Conrad Graf piano. This piano is exhibited in Vienna in his house. It was one of his last pieces he died in November the same year. The modartt Graf piano is from 1826, so from the same time. It gives back better the composition, somehow on a modern Steinway piano it is too clear. I tried out in OBS to rotate the picture of one of the videos to have a better zoom on my hands. It could seem strange, but on a mobile phone if auto rotate isn't turned on you could look better on my hands. It was also easier to use the virtual keyboard from pianoteq, because on the right side is a button, which could detach the keyboard to another window which could be selected in OBS better. You don't have to cut the picture for it. I would like to record the piece this week on a very old real Ehrbar piano, so you could compare, which is better the modeled or the real piano.

ORGANTEQ can be used freely. But it is primarily a program for traditional organists.
For my competition entry, I chose a beautiful composition by Hieronymus Praetorius.

Here's my entry for this year. A simple piano arrangement of Lifelong Song by Men I Trust using the Hamburg Steinway D. I used a tape emulation to give it a slightly more lo-fi sound, and added some gentle drums with EZDrummer 3 and pads from Arturia OP-Xa.
