Topic: Anybody using Mastering In-Ears with Pteq?

Hi guys and dolls ...*-)

I consider buying Mastering In-Ears to use with Pteq, because using Headphones causes Headaches very fast for me (and i tried a lot of different ones already).

Thus i wonder if anybody uses Mastering In-Ears with Pteq and wouldn't mind to share their experience here?

Are there certain Brands / Models to avoid?

Some recommendations perhaps?

Thank you in advance

Pboy

Any particular reason why you would use in ear rather than circumaural?

All headphones will exacerbate tinnitus more easily than loudspeakers.

i tried a lot of different circumaural as well as supra aural headphones. All made me feel uncomfortable and gave me headaches pretty soon (not tinnitus).

Also i need glasses to use printed sheet music, which cause extra troubles with headphones.

With In-Ears these issues disappear.

So i'd like to find ones that sound great with PTeq.

I see not tinnitus but physical discomfort.  That can be down to adjustment and the arrangement of the headband. The arms of glasses can indeed present an issue on the pads of circumaural headphones for people that need to wear glasses.

Shure always made excellent in ear headphones.

What budget did you have in mind?

At the lower end of the market (before the dirt cheap stuff) these dynamic earbuds are well rated:

Another thing to consider with the balanced armature fully sealed in ear headphones the scraping of the cable on your clothes can be extremely loud compared to to dynamic earbuds which don't amplify that sound. OTOH the multi diaphragm balanced armature type can sound excellent for modest cost.

Re: Anybody using Mastering In-Ears with Pteq?

Hi

I use Pianoteq at home and on stage.

At home I use a pair of Adam A7V monitors and, when time is not appropiate (late evening and night) I use a pair of AudioTechnica ATH-M50X or the inear monitors I use on stage: Sennheiser IE 100 Pro.

Those inears are built for the stage, very good sound isolation and a minimal harmonic distortion on loud volume levels (<1%).

I preffer the sound of a dynamic driver than the "new" trend of miniaturizing with those balanced armature... I prefer a solid all-around single dynamic driver than a multi driver solution because more drivers is not a synonim of better quality, it only brings more complexity to the equation.

For me, I'm comfortable with inears and I'm used to wear them for several hours, and I'm very happy with a lightweight comfy single driver solution than a heavier multidriver solution... Quality over quantity...

I would only change my Sennheiser IE 100 Pro for a higher model of the same brand (Sennheiser's IE 300, IE 400 Pro or IE 500 Pro) or the industry claimed Etymotic (the single driver models ER2SE or ER2XR).

Tried half a dozen of ChiFi recommended by other musicians and not gonna use them again...

Best regards!

Edit: Don't believe all the ratings or recommendations on Amazon, some are fake reviews and some are from people that don't know anything about audio or sound...

@ Tahlendorf

Thanks for your insights regarding the drivers and pointing me to the IE 100 Pro.

Those headphones reviewed well elsewhere - for the price.

The way to read Amazon reviews is with a pinch of salt, however you can glean insights, you just have to be able to read between the lines.  Read the negative reviews first. Typically you can discount the odd stand out negative review where people have had an unfortunate faulty unit. If for instance the product has an otherwise very high positive review count and a very low negative count. Of course alarm bells should ring in your head if several other people echo these complaints.

I also mentioned Shure in ear headphones.

The KZ-ZS10 PRO iems get consistently good reviews over at the vdrums forums - worth taking note since the drum set is probably the only instrument with a wider frequency range than the piano.

a number of players over there prefer them to iems from much more expensive, 'high quality' brands

ultimateear (not plural) in the uk do molded sleeves for them and many other brands and ship all over the world

i have no affiliation with either company

I had one of those ZS10 Pro too but are too uncomfortable for my liking, too bulky and feel heavy on my ears.
They didn't sound bad (bass a little slow and a bit bloated) but I don't consider any KZ In-Ears as Mastering tools... affordable but lacking quality in some areas.

I've upgraded my Sennheiser IE 100 Pro with the higher Sennheiser IE 300 (only 144€ on Amazon Spain, couldn't let it pass) and the jump in quality is noticeable.
I would say that they're on par with the ATH-M50X headphones I use on the studio, I'm really impressed with the IE 300 so far... amazing details on almost all frequency range.

I believe Phil Best uses in ear monitors,

FWIW I can wear the reading glasses with HD800/s. They have big pads that don't have to clamp hard on your head. The 600 series not so much.
So you still can consider some big pads headphones I suggest.

Personally not a fan of in ear but obviously there are some good ones.  I acknowledge that in ears will obviously have less issues in that area. YMMV as they say.
