Topic: Why I've ordered a (10mm ceramic) precision ball bearing

Dear piano lovers,

I had been trying and trying to find a way to get better single note repetitions on my P515. It has been my conviction that the NWX action in the P515 is very well made quality control wise. Last night, I raised the back of my keyboard by a thick card width. Since then it has been much easier to rapidly repeat single notes. However, I want to see if I can further improve the action performance by making sure the action itself is optimally level. I may need to contact Yamaha or pay a visit to my local music store to assess this. But in the mean time, I'll work on the assumption that when the key is fully depressed it should be exactly horizontal. Hence the precision ceramic ball bearing. If anyone is interested, I'll post my findings in this thread. Just got to wait for the ball!

Warmest regards,

Chris

I'd be interested in your findings and/or seeing some pictures of the tweaks you're making with the ball bearing. My keybed is very close to yours (Yamaha CP-88, same action as the P515 but without escapement). I've only had it for a couple of months, and overall I really like the action, but it's heavy enough to expose flaws in my technique I never noticed on my FP30.

Thank you for your response miiindbullets. I think my technique needs working on too. But some actions are easier to repeat on than others. Take this action from Yamaha for example which is the plastic version of the GrandTouch S

I messed about with the ball bearing trying to get the keyboard level. I think I'd be better off with a laser level. Anyway, I think it is easier generally to repeat notes if a) The keyboard is the right height from the floor and b) The piano stool/chair is at he correct height also. My keyboard is on a pair of tressels and is much too high off the floor. I'm thinking of getting a suitable stand but don't want to spend money if it doesn't help. More research required. I'll keep you posted.

Warmest regards,

Chris

I've ordered a Roland Z-type keyboard stand. It's exactly the same height as the bespoke Yamaha stand for the P515. This will give me the correct height for my keys. I'll then practice rapid single note repetitions and see how I get on...

Warmest regards,

Chris
