Topic: Sidereal Delay for 19-ET Piano - Harrington performed by Aron Kallay

Hi, I finally purchased this amazing software today, so I'd like to share the recording which turned me onto Pianoteq, of a microtonal prelude from 2004 of mine from Aron Kallay's most recent album, Beyond 12, Reinventing the Piano, Vol. II.

Hello jeff_harrington,

And welcome to the forum  It’s great to have you on board

Interesting music. have not heard Pianoteq used in this kind of music.

I tried to analyze a little. I feel as 4 sections in this piece. 0 - 1,15   1,16 - 2,40     2,45 - 4,08   and then the "ending" with diminuendo as a nice contrast to the beginning with a crescendo from piano to forte in the second section (1,16 to 2,40)

I looked at the score and thought it have a ( for me ) a difficult rhythm because of the tempo. I have uploaded over 300 pieces Pianoteq/Organteq with different kind music, but can’t play this.

I liked the second part 1,16  -  2,40 much because of the crescendo to forte, Beautiful forte part. Enjoyed the part 3,40 - 3,56 because things happen.   It’s always exciting when things happen in the music.

Thanks for sharing. Listening to this was like opening a door to a new world of music. I’m old but still learning - as Mahatma Gandhi said: ”Learn as if you were to live forever”.

Best wishes,

Stig

Thanks, PE!

If you can take mictrotonal music, you also might like a piece from Aron's first album, by Issac Schankler, Alien Warp Etude:

Both albums recorded on Pianoteq microtonal instruments.

Thanks for the listen!

PS That philosophy of constant learning is a lot like a Zen philosophy, too... Beginner's  Mind. FWIW, I'm 66... ;-)

Cheers!

Very much enjoyed both of these. I wasn't familiar with 19-ET, so I Googled it. Apparently the concept goes back to the 16th century! I've been fascinated by microtones for as long as I can remember, long before I could play an instrument, read notation, or even had the word 'microtones' in my vocabulary. I used to call them 'naughty notes' - the ones you weren't supposed to play! But I wasn't able to fully explore microtones and alternate tunings until I discovered Pianoteq. Here's my little tribute to Pianoteq's microtonal capabilities, recreating a 'found' tuning:

That Gandhi quote was new to me, but it's an excellent motto to live by. It's what I've always tried to do.

Cimbalom is part of the free collection which you just have to download and install. There's some really cool stuff in there!  https://www.modartt.com/free_stuff

very interesting piece, sounds really cool.  i've done some experiments with improvising with the different tunings, since pianoteq makes it so easy to try different things.  so far nothing has been worth sharing, but it's been a lot of fun. i've always been a big admirer of Harry Partch.

Thanks, budo, for the commnents and the listen(s).
My 19et piece was a nightmare to write on a 12-ET keyboard.  Fiths are maj7ths... etc.

Nice to see you turning up in these forums Jeff!

You might be interested in this experiment with alternative tunings, also realised in Pianoteq: https://forum.modartt.com/viewtopic.php?id=8159
