Thanks to Gounod’s use of a score that contained the extra measure added by Schwencke, in Gounod’s Ave Maria setting of this Bach Prelude, that extra measure is probably more prevalent and influential in performances of the piece; in other words, people notice if the “Schwencke measure” is missing. It is not found in one of the presumably authentic Bach scores of the piece. An interesting bit of music trivia.
