Topic: Close mic setup with the new NY Steinway

I use the close mic settings below with Bechstein and I am very satisfied with the results. Settings are from this forum, unfortunately I don't remember who published these.

However, these same settings are not at all satisfactory with the new NY Steinway. I would appreciate any help to get the same quality mic settings with Steinway.

X = +0.380
Y = +2.220
Z = 0.840
Angle = +180.0
Vertical Angle = -90.0

X = +0.742
Y = +1.085
Z = 0.844
Angle = -180.0
Vertical Angle = -90.0

Re: Close mic setup with the new NY Steinway

Hi Jutzi,

Liking the tones with those mics on Bechstein DG.

Wonder if you could try this first..

Microphone 1

X = +0.408
Y = +2.125
Z = 0.840
Angle = +180.0
Vertical Angle = -90.0

Microphone 2

X = +0.722
Y = +0.980
Z = 0.844
Angle = -180.0
Vertical Angle = -90.0

I made sure of these following also:

a
Select Compensation "Delay" to "On"

b
I also matched each microphone's Left and Right Delays times. (they are different in stock Steinway, iirc 2 timings to alter to match better - you'll need to right click the respective level meters in the interace and see that they're the same - this did bring a little more similarity together).

I feel that it could be closer still in overall 'sense of the space and level' although obviously pianos are different. A little more movement of those mics might be all that you need to do (maybe 'link them' to make moving them together easy, or just move each individually).

In real life, each piano is very different - so, even with very similar microphones, you may need to make more adjustments to get closer to the overall timbre you liked from these mics with the Bechstein.

Really hoping this is close enough to work - but other things to consider beyond mics might include things from output volume (the Steinway was louder with the mics - moving them attenuated) - but also, EQ, lowering "Gain" or main output volume.. adjusting stereo width could make it match a little better - but you'll know what you want to hear. Just like a studio with new piano brought in, it's normal to move microphones a little from known sweet spots to gather some precise tones.

New in Pianoteq is 4 mic arrays AB, MS, ORTF and XY. Trying these, you might find one suited to your needs (they differ in various ways). These load in audience perspective, but linked, you can drag them close - you might find one of these closer to strings might give similar.. or drag them to player perspective, and place one extra microphone at bass end, or under the board perhaps for that wooded texture.

But - hoping the first shot at top there is what you most need.

Cheers Just.

Thank you so much for very valuable advice.
I will try these tomorrow or latest during the weekend.

Cheers,
Jussi

Oh wow, I completely missed those, lurking in the right-click menu! I'm going to enjoy trying them out

Oh, I didn't see that either. I am glad!

Jutzi and Qexl:

Which presets are you using as your points of departure for these mic settings for the Bechstein and the Steinway? (Different presets use different mics.)

Re: Close mic setup with the new NY Steinway

Hi Jake,

I began with each pianos main default presets - but definitely, going to be wider differences other than mics, if using more far apart preset types, as the internals of each piano preset may be differently EQ'd and  otherwise enhanced under the hood.

The 1:1 with default presets gives me hope that the first pass on the suggested mic array will transfer to other presets (and spatially put Jutzi in a similar "room" and tone range) - but always going to be a wide margin for audio to behave differently if for example, Jutzi were using Cinematic Bechstein and Jazz Ny Steinway One is soft, the other sharp.. so mics would only address a portion of disparities arising.

[Edit to add] - it will be important to be sure to select mic 1 for in bass (higher on screen display), mic 2 in treble range of piano - otherwise if other way 'round, the stereo image will be really in opposite land

[Edit to add] - @dazric & scherbakov.al - yeah, it's really good to see those there now - they give a fast start point and each with their own character. I'm certain to use these a lot.

Qexl:

Your close mic setup worked definitely better than mine. However, the treble sound is somehow thin and unlively. Standard NY Steinway DC Close Mic works much better. Actually, might be hard to achieve better results.

I might start a separate thread about my setup and my challenges.
