Topic: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

We're hearing a lot about this instrument; it's popular.  I like its on board sounds, as anyone else who bought it would.
Trouble is, it doesn't seem to pianoteq friendly, mainly, thinks me, down to the different velocity curve requirements.  So different from my old FP50 which was easy to set up.
Is this a Yamaha problem in general, a P515 one in particular, or . . . just me?
I seem to be able to get nothing really decent sounding anymore, out of PTq  . . . . I surely should be able to.  Now, I did think things weren't so bad, but the 515 also needed setting up to my liking, and that sounds great now.
Any sensible suggestions out there?

I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

While on my Yamaha DIGITAL PIANO P-95, I see Pianoteq displaying velocities (8 thru 125).  And, use the furnished Pianoteq velocity curves which have been supplied for the Yamaha P-85 an earlier model.  Supposedly they apply to the later model P-115 as well.

Have you tried any of those curves available to the Yamaha P-85 on the P-515 model, since you got that current model?

Of the three (3) curves available from the P-85, the middle suits a P-95 keyboard default settings.  Each of the other two (2) curves available suits either a hard or soft internal keyboard setting separately.

If the suggested curves fail as starting points, you may need to look into the VelPro software reference at this recent thread, https://forum.modartt.com/viewtopic.php?id=6889.

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Note-on maps that were posted originally for the Yamaha P-85 model had been removed.

Recently, I reposted them.  They are available from this link: https://forum.modartt.com/viewtopic.php...93#p964593.

Since MODARTT has yet to furnish support directly on its Community Velocity curves page (https://www.modartt.com/velocity_curves) for specifically the P-515, although it was introduced some time ago last year, you may want to see if you can urge official support for such a popular board from Yamaha.

Thanks.  I believe there are vel curves for the 515; but maybe my answer lies in the internal vol of the piano.  It's set to 100; I'll whack it up to 127 and see how she goes then . . . .that woill also increase the overall power output which isn't any better than that of the DGX650 at the moment.
I'll be back . . .

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Managed to sort it out ok.  The sound spectrum seems different to the Yamaha sounds, but that's to be expected.  Overall it plays better on PTq than it does on it's own voices; they are too bassy by far and need a heavier touch.
No longer use onboard sounds.

18 Feb  Have to admit to going back to the onboards.  Seems to me the piano companies are fighting back . . talking of which our local heavyweight is in Vegas for Saturday's fight . . .

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Hi guys,

I love my white P515. I don't use the onboard sounds either. I play through Pianoteq only. I have been spending months trying to perfect a curve, s curves, power curves etc., but am now very pleased with a straight line "curve" (I forget the coordinates but will post tomorrow). Also the volume I was playing Pianoteq at was to low previously, but now that I've significantly increased the volume (via amp) the realism has also increased (significantly).

I'll post more soon

Warmest regards

Chris

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Velocity = 0, 18, 99, 127; 1, 1, 127, 127

I've found the above produces a consistent and very even velocity response. I use these coordinates in the velocity curve filter within Cantabile, but it could be used in the velocity pane of Pianoteq standalone.

I'll also post this as a velocity curve in that section of the Pianoteq forum.

Enjoy,

Warmest regards,

Chris

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Is there a way to convert a cantabile filter file into a .ptq file? It's just that I'd like the transfer the curve that I've made in Cantabile to the Pianoteq velocity pane as not everyone has Cantabile!

Warmest regards,

Chris

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Velocity = [0, 7, 98, 127; 1, 1, 127, 127]

I like this with a slight lid mod, I'll check value later and post.
I use this with Blüthner Concert Recording BA.

Warmest Regards,

Chris

P.s. default (Medium) curve on P515

LID 0.98
Limiter OFF (Volume - 6  with amp volume adjusted accordingly)
Select Small Hall Reverb from drop down menu

Re: Pianoteq and the 515 . . . .

Velocity=[0,27,65,106;2,6,64,127] (also posted in P515 velocity curve thread)

Dear Yamaha P515 / Pianoteq (7) owners,

The above curve is now by far my favourite. It works beautifully with PTQ7.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated and if anyone would like an audio demo I'll provide one (although the psychoacoustic experience of actually playing it would be much better). Also I can provide my current .fxp if anyone would like that,

Warmest regards,

Chris

Stay safe all
