Re: 1st International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments

Thanks for pointing to this - really love hearing this music produced by instruments of the time. Some good performances going back to some previous years too.

Interesting to hear modern recordings on these old instruments, and compare to how close Modartt is with their reproductions.

Seeking period piano VSTIs is how I found Pianoteq - really love the collection. I often wonder how many other Pianoteq people originally came for the period instruments. They're quite special to me.

It's the same story for me. Modartt's historical collection is simply superb - I don't think there's anything else that even comes close to matching it.

The historic instrument collection is also what brought me to Pianoteq in the first place and remains my prime reason for supporting its use in a serious way for both pedagogy and performance.  'hope to see its continued support and expansion in subsequent Pianoteq development!

edit: speaking of Chopin and "period" instruments, here's a great thesis I recently came across discussing Chopin and various historic temperaments: http://digitool.library.mcgill.ca/webcl...260465~113 .  de Morgan (1843) is what I'm currently using for the Chopin rep I'm working with, but diapason is a whole other kettle of fish...

The link doesn't work for me.  I presume this is behind a paywall or only available to logged in members or something like that.

Could you post the title etc. so we can websearch for it ourselves ?

Thanks.

sorry about the trouble with the link!
The thesis is from Michèle Duguay and is titled "The Influence of Unequal Temperament on Chopin’s Piano
Works" (McGill, 2016).  An internet search with those terms should yield a working link on McGill's site, but i've also uploaded the pdf to zippyshare (just in case): https://www26.zippyshare.com/v/ZiFpSAEh/file.html .

Hi _DJ_,

I had the same prob as sjgcit accessing that earlier link - but the new one works fine!, thank you for this. Really interesting info.

In the time between your posts, I was searching across the topic and found this, which in return, I hope you and others find of some interest. The website version (middle link below) may be the easiest to navigate. The first is a link to the home page, the third direct to a pdf.

About Temperaments, PDF version - Rollingball.com

Not sure yet how much overlaps or contradicts but would be interested in your opinions of course.

Via your linked thesis by Michèle Duguay, I was made more aware of how central to this topic Chopin is - I had always estimated that these ideas have been broadly and selectively applied (or overlooked) in the works of so many across the ages but Chopin's music is such an interesting focal point (lacking strict classical training, so am not aware how common or obvious it is to think about these things at present, esp with ubiquitous modern tuning). Thanks again!
