Trying new temperaments has never been so easy.

What follows is a short demo of a famous traditional tune played on the usual Equal Temperament (12-TET)

Now the 3rd note of the major scale is tuned to give a perfect interval - hear the difference...

Finally the 3rd and 5th are tuned to perfect intervals - this results in a stretching of the octave as you can see in the image below

How is all this so easily possible ???

With a well-known tune as this pushing the tuning too far will just make it sound horrid - unless YOU know better ??? Would love to hear your tunings and what you can do with PitchGrid ... Pleasant or Wacky !

I’m Peter Jung. I make PitchGrid.

This is the right way to show it: a tune everyone knows, then the same tune with a just 3rd, then 3rd and 5th. You can hear the colour change without a lecture.

The stretched octave when both 5/4 and 3/2 are aligned is not a bug. If you keep twelve keys and insist on those two pure intervals, 2/1 no longer closes. That’s one of the things the two-dimensional picture makes obvious.

Pianoteq is a particularly good instrument for this because it already speaks MTS-ESP, so the plugin can retune it without rewriting the MIDI. Same wish as you on Organteq.

If anyone here wants to try: https://pitchgrid.io/ — there’s a trial. I’d rather hear more of these A/B clips than talk about the theory. Happy to answer setup questions.

No, thank you peterjungx for such an easy to use VST. Making what was for me a difficult subject easier to understand. It's great you are opening up great possibilities to simple piano players such as myself. I've had a go with ODDSOUND in the past but the results were reliant on other's efforts primarily and imported Scala files. Now, of course, I have a better understanding of what makes for an acceptable tuning...

Well done on your software, I hope others here too find it a delight and explore the possibilities as I am doing.

Modartt's Pianoteq also offers octave stretching, I'm wondering if I need to turn that off when using PitchGrid to get the full effect ...
