I'm planning to make a upright piano based on a grand from pianoteq, any tips on how to make it sound good? I was considering to start with the SK-EX or Model D

From the grands to me the kivir Pleyel sounds the most like an upright. You could shorten the strings to taste.
You can of course go the other way and use U4 to make a pristine sounding high end upright with super long strings.

Yes, all the historic grands are very upright compatible.
Historic grans tends to have very short sustain compared to modern grands which resembles a modern upright quite well, and they also tend to have lots of character.
I use a morph between the free historic Erard, Stainway D NY, and the U4. Then I lower the impedence and string length a bit to roughly match an upright. I think it sounds marvelous. I also Humanize most parameters in the model. In particular the unison with seems to add a bunch of character.
I also just tried a morph between Erard and Steinway D NY with the above adjustments, and it works very well, but the above piano is my favourite. Im guessing you dont own the u4 though.

Oh, that's a great idea to use morphing between the pianos, I'll definitely try it out. And yes, I don't own the U4 unfortunately.
