Interesting playing style, special chords, harmony focusing, key change,    I like this one.  There is something different, your own style - I think the fact that your music has flow that means a lot.  Well done Mario.      Welcome to the forum and good luck.

I am happy to take part in this competition and share my composition ‘For Simone’, a piece I wrote in honour of my grandmother. The warm and expressive character of Pianoteq inspired me greatly, especially the versatile sounds of the Steinway D. This sound perfectly matches the emotion and atmosphere I wanted to capture in this piece. With this piece, I hope to tell a story that feels both personal and universal. Thank you for allowing me to share this musical journey with you!

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2024 - entries

This is my first time applying to a contest. As a hobby, I play my favorite classical music, such as Chopin, Bach, and Beethoven. I've been using Pianoteq for about two years, but I've been using it more for practice recently. I think the response to touch and pedal operation is straightforward and natural, making it perfect for practice. This time, I edited the material I recorded during practice and put it together into one video. There are some rough parts in the performance, but I hope you will enjoy it.

Unfortunately I'm not going to have anything ready for the contest this year . 2024 has been something of an annus horribilis for me, with numerous problems including a health scare (now under control, I hope). Never mind, I'm going to enjoy listening to the entries and voting. Looks like some super stuff coming in again - good luck to all!

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2024 - entries

Here is my Video. I hope it is inspiring. It's a simple song only made with Pianoteq.

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2024 - entries

Here is my video contest entry:

It is a song I wrote recently. Involves multiple instruments, handpan, sampled drum, voice, ukelele, ubass and piano of course (though it is pretty much buried in there, soundwise).

It's more or less my first time recording AND trying to mix a song, so it feels pretty raw to me.
Video is shot at one of my jobs, where I do sound meditations, hence the singing bowl, gong and beds.
All is done pretty hasty, but I do hope the idea behind it is clearer than the video!

Enjoy!

I've been experimenting with how different pianos give any performance a new voice. My entry for this year's contest is this rendering of an improv piece by Derek, a member of the piano forum. I used this recording to study the various instruments in Pianoteq, and found that I liked the voice of Steinway B the best for this particular piece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh8edpAZeSE

It's amazing how digital tech like Pianoteq lets us choose a more fitting grand piano from one song to the next, in much the same way that a guitarist might switch from a Fender Strat to a Gibson Les Paul between songs.

Black Summer 2019-20

I dedicate this piece of music to all those who suffered and died - both people and animals -  in one of Australia's worst climate-driven disasters in living history: the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20.

Music composed by James Beattie.

WARNING: This video contains scenes that may disturb some viewers.

____________________________________

I composed and realised all of the music in this piece using Modartt's Pianoteq software, with the exception of the choir, which uses the Eric Whitacre Singers choir pack from Spitfire Audio LABS.

The very intense, wide-spectrum "instrument" that can be heard in all but the first couple of minutes of the piece is a highly processed and dramatically stretched version of an earlier solo piano piece of mine, played on one of Pianoteq's piano instruments (I can't remember which one).

The other Pianoteq Instruments I used were:
Guitar (various presets)
Vintage Tines MKI (Rainstick)
New York Steinway Piano
Tubular Bells

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2024 - entries

This video comes with a health warning: your ears and good taste may be offended by my playing.  You've been warned.

This is my mercifully brief attempt at the jazz standard Autumn Leaves.  Now, I'm not a good pianist and I developed this version by ear, not from sheet music or, heaven forbid, actually learning it properly.  If this video stands for anything it would be the dangers of not learning stuff properly.  That said, the reason I try and play is for fun.  I don't normally subject other people to my attempts and it must be said that Pianoteq combined with my very cheap 61 key midi keyboard works as well as I need it to.  It certainly does encourage me to try new things and, despite my previous statements, to learn a little more.  When I try things I know the cringe-making mistakes are not the fault of the instrument and I know it will produce lovely sounds if I do my bit and play reasonably well.

So I'd recommend Pianoteq to any beginner with a USB Midi capable keyboard and a laptop.  It's a fun combo and encourages learning more.

This is done with the Bluthner Chamber recording BA preset as rendered by my Linux system using built-in audio hardware with Pianoteq 8.4.0.

Hey friends,
This is an original I just finished for this contest! Wrote using the Blüthner, my favourite piano (of what I have), and as I was writing I realised it worked well with the felt piano, which I don't use often, but now I love it. Just great to have such an expressive and evocative instrument. Really nice to play.

Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2024 - entries

Hi all!

Here is my entry: there are still flowers: a reflection on hope and impermanence, by me, Stacy Fahrion. https://youtu.be/T4nxNE9bETM?si=6agHzte6_YkXNPMg

This piece is in a tuning I created a few years ago for another piece called Summoning a Storm. I revisited it recently and improvised with it, and this little piece grew out of that improvisation, then added my own photos of sunflowers in Colorado to the video.

I recently released an album (Alien Dreamscapes in Just Intonation) with alternate tunings all created using Pianoteq, and I love how easy it is to create my own tunings and even boost specific harmonics within the software. The tuning circle that you see about 10 seconds in is a really beautiful way to visualize the spacing of each tuning.

Fair warning that the rest of this description gets nerdy.

It's in 3-limit just intonation, with Pythagorean commas between each white key and the black key above it. Commas are notes that are close enough in tuning that they sound like kind of shimmering slightly different versions of the same note.

3-limit means the highest prime number in the ratios I'm using is the number 3—all the ratios contain multiples of 3, or the 3rd harmonic, which is approximately a perfect 5th. So in 3-limit just intonation, essentially, I'm stacking 5ths to create all the notes in the tuning. The Pythagorean comma is about 23.46¢. (In equal temperament, there are 100¢ in each half step, so this comma is approximately 1/8 of a step.)

The fundamental for this tuning is C, E on the keyboard is actually tuned as Eb, F is actually tuned as an F# (and yes it does mess with me a little that I've programmed an augmented 2nd between E and F on the keyboard), and B is actually tuned as a B-flat, so I called this tuning Dorian #4 with Pythagorean Commas.

I have an Aster on my back porch that, in the early days of fall this year, kept blooming when the wild flowers nearby had gone brown. Because of this, it became an oasis to pollinating bees and wasps in fairly large numbers. I was afraid to share the porch with them at first, but they were peaceful, and kept coming back every day, for like 2 whole weeks-- and they never flew inside our home! I was delighted to marvel at the beauty (and possible danger) -- and was inspired to write this song.

About the video: it's a looped video of me petting my dog in slow motion.

Notes for 2024 Modartt contest:
1. This is an original work, first published: now, 11/17/2024, made by me, bani.
2. It uses a Pianoteq 8 instrument as the bass -- the Hohner Electra Calma Pacifica (What a wonderful preset name, right?) by Klaus P. Raush

Totally agree about the joy of the creativity of these performances! Yeah, its my sense that version 8.2 and above, there is a new level of clarity and manipulability especially for the Model Ds as well as the Bluthner and other big grands.

I really enjoy your style!

Here is a piece of mine using Piano Teq in a live performance.
This is a piece from my concert last month, a concert for a string quartet, real-time electroacoustic processing, electronics, and piano.
The piece is one movement from a suite of my compositions called ‘text’.
The Piano Teq is entirely constable, which is a particularly nice feature.
It is flexible enough for classical and contemporary recordings.
In this piece, I set up a five-mic simulation with as little reverberation as possible so that the rich sound remains. Still, you can apply your favourite reverb of the same quality as the reverberation of the live strings or deliberately for a different purpose. Fine-tuning is also supported, so baroque and microtonal approaches can be implemented.
By changing these parameters in real-time, it is very imaginative to incorporate unique sounds that are and are not piano into your concerts.

Still haven't practised this piece enough to be able to play it from memory, but that's what videos are for, right? It uses a lot of MIDI processing, which is something I'm quite interested in. Re: MODARTT VIDEO CONTEST 2024 - entries

Hi everyone,

I was preparing for a movie theme concert when I came across this contest and thought I could post something here.
I almost exclusively use Pianoteq for that and find it such a playable and nuanced instrument. With a good controller you have absolute command over the quietest pianissimos and the richest fortissimos, it just blows my mind.
So here is my take, it is still a work in progress, I hope you can forgive my occasional clumsiness.
