Topic: New Pianoteq user...cpu upgrades.

Just downloaded Pianoteq 8. I chose Bosendorfer and Shigeru for my initial packs. I'll probably add the C. Bechstein in a bit. My existing laptop has an i5 M560 processor (2 core-4 threads/2.67 ghz). I have 8 gb ram on board. I was playing the Shigeru Felt 1 setting and experienced a drop out yesterday. The Bosendorfer settings have been fine "so far" but the dropout perturbed me a little. I also got a "few" overload notifications at times if I really pressed. I decided to buy a used i7-4810 (I'll have to sell once it arrives) with four cores...but after doing about three hours of research I decided to go with a used Ryzen 5, with the 6-core 4650U processor (with 16 gb ram).

I'm hoping for triple the fun with 6 cores (12 threads). The benchmark scores show it to be much more powerful than the i5. I'd like to set polyphony to 256 like my Clavinova 745. Funny that I haven't used anything with an AMD based processor since the old Thunderbird based desktop I had over 20 years ago...back when 1.4 Ghz was all the rage.

This probably was the best move. I can go for the Synchron player and the Vienna Symphonic Library Bosendorfer samples later on. No way to run that the right way with an i5 or i7. I have stone age laptops these days...all based before 2014.

Re: New Pianoteq user...cpu upgrades.

Hi, 4650U should work well, I have a R7 5800U and it runs well. This CPU is more or less similar to the 4650U you bought. It is impotant to use an ASIO soundcard if you run PT under windows.
Extra core don't make much difference, about 4 threads are used (I know it from inspecting the task manager).

Re: New Pianoteq user...cpu upgrades.

Ryzen 5 (4650U w/16 Gb ram)

External USB DAC for Aux-In to the Clavinova.

Performance Index...65 - 184 (high performance setting).

Polyphony set to 256. Network adapter disabled. No dropouts or artifacts at max sustain...but the processor is at the limits. Definitely something with 8 cores or beyond...running about 2.5 - 3 Ghz would end the problems.
