Topic: OrganTeq Still No PianoTeq Microtonality

Just a quick check:  Am I assuming correctly that OrganTeq still does not have equivalent microtonality features with PianoTeq (nor at least "Make Equal-Temperament")?

Pretty good chance I'd buy it if so, but not likely if not.

Thanks!

No such luck. Members of the ever-growing microtonal community have eagerly been waiting for this for five years, since the launch of version 1. The new update 2.1. does not have microtuning. At this point, it seems that Organteq will never implement microtuning, and for organ sounds, we have to go to other instruments, such as as Kontakt or Hauptwerk.

There are a number of features for changing temperament--just not importing scala files (that I can find).  There's also per note-tuning (that changes every pipe) and per-pipe tuning, but it's quite tricky/time-consuming for making really extensive scale changes.  Like everyone else, I'd love to see something like scala file support.  I'm betting that it's a ton of work to do--and microtuning wasn't supported until PTQ 2.0, so it would make sense that it would come in something like Organteq 3 or 4, but I'd love to be surprised and have it tomorrow!

You can try the demo version and see how well the current features work for you.  The temperament is at the top left of the UI next to the diapason, while the global tuning is under the main preset settings and then each stop instance has its own tuning settings.  Seems to work kinda like PTQ Pro for general settings with a keyboard shown and the ability to draw or enter numerical values per note--but no custom temperament wheel like PTQ (yet...fingers crossed).  I know the release notes said that new temperaments were added--though how much was changed "under the hood" is anybody's guess.

Yes, it does have several useful temperament presets, and it's possible to create your own tunings with the tedious per-note editing. The problem for microtonalists is that each note can only be retuned by a quartertone up or down. This is already a limitation for 12-note octave-repeating scales (+/-100 cents would be more useful), and it makes it impossible to use any scale with more notes per octave than 12. In addition to scala file support, the following features, all found in Pianoteq, would be desirable: Tuning editor with a pitch wheel and the 'Make equal temperament' function; support of multichannel pitch bend tuning / MPE; support of the VST3 microtuning parameter used by Dorico; support of MTS-ESP and MTS; extended multichannel key layouts for microtonal keyboard controllers such as Lumatone.

There's another organ software that for its temperament presets, it has an xml list of all the notes available, and their frequency. I think that may be an easy way to implement this, to have a proprietary xml that can be edited by users and uploaded to the program. Then you don't need to have a "make equal" function, you just load the "equal" xml file.
