Topic: Changing the Mics on the Bösendorfer

If I change the mics of the Bösendorfer 280VC preset, the sound is low and distant. It doesn't seem this way on the other presets.

That's not enough information Don. Change in what way?

If for example you move the angle of a cardioid microphone you can charge the balance significantly.

Changing microphone positioning, angle and models of microphones and indeed number of mics can radically change the sounds of anything you are recording.

Have you already checked the Compensation effect by chance? If it is off it doesn't cheange the volume of the mic (so just like in a real recording situation distant mics will sound lower in volume level).

I have also made this observation with other presets since 8.2. For example, some presets also sound muffled and distant to me when I select the binaural setting instead of the microphones.
I have been in contact with the support team, who would like to have an audio recording including a midi file. My only problem is that I don't hear the problem in the recording on the PC itself, but only in the setup with my Focusrite, which I have connected to the audio-in of my Clavinova. When I call up the same preset in version 8.1.3, the sound sounds much more voluminous.
I also notice the same thing with the Bösendorfer when I switch from microphone to binaural, it sounds somehow thinned out.
I hope that we can somehow get to the bottom of the problem.

It's hard to pin down what it is. If I use the same mic on all the other Bösendorfer presets they seem fine but it just seems to be the 'Bösendorfer 280VC' preset. The sound is thin-out and tinny and the volume sounds about half compared to the others or the default mics of the Bösendorfer 280VC. It seems like a bug to me.

How do you mean?
Are you swapping out the cardioid microphones for dipole, Omni?

What choice have you made that made that difference. If you're going to talk to the developers they need to know what you did in order to replicate the issue.

Re: Changing the Mics on the Bösendorfer

So far, the most beautiful recording I found from Bösendorfer VC280 was this one:

I like how the harp frame's sound appears & feels to came a bit later than the strings sounds, giving a very nice hint in a sense of harmony when single notes are distinct.
Also this is the warmest VC280 among all videos I saw.
A preset like that could be a very good idea.

I haven't previously experimented with Binaural mode of any preset. I gave it a whirl with the several different models (using the VSTi in Cakewalk Sonar) and found that many had significantly more room sound (i.e. higher level from distant mics). Also the stereo image was already panned to the right with some presets in Microphone mode and was panned even more in Binaural mode.

For example, the NY Steinway D Classical was centered in Microphone mode, but had a 6dB higher level in the right channel in Binaural, and slightly more room level in both channels. The Bösendorfer 280VC was already 6dB higher on the right in Microphone mode which went to 9dB higher in Binaural with a significantly higher room level in both channels but seemingly more in the right channel and with a thinner/brighter tone on the right.

I haven't checked a lot of other presets or tried this with earlier releases of Pianoteq, but there are definitely some oddities with some presets in Binaural mode in 8.3.
