Topic: Scriabin - 8 Etudes Op.42 No.4, 8
Scriabin's 8 Etudes Op.42, composed in 1903, fall within his middle compositional period. In these etudes, in addition to pursuing his unique approach to harmony, a notable feature is the use of cross-rhythms, where the right and left hands play different rhythms simultaneously.
No.4 is an etude practicing cross-rhythms where, within a single beat, the right hand plays two eighth notes against the left hand’s triplet (2 against 3). It features a sweet and transparent sound.
No.8 is an etude with the unconventional cross-rhythm of right hand quintuplets against left hand triplets (5 against 3). In this piece, a notation favored by Schumann is used, where one note of the left hand's triplet is placed ahead, crossing over the bar line. The distinctive harmonic chorale in the middle section is memorable.
