The 19th century poet Théophile Gauthier wrote a poem that I had to learn by heart at school when I was nine, "Premier sourire du printemps" ("First Smile of Spring"):

Tandis qu’à leurs œuvres perverses
Les hommes courent haletants,
Mars, qui rit malgré les averses,
Prépare en secret le printemps.

While at their perverse works
Men run panting,
March, laughing despite the showers,
Prepares secretly the spring.

( 80 years later this is the only stanza I can remember among eight ... ).

So I thought it might make a good title for my first piece of March music amidst the sleet ...
