Topic: 2.1 studio monitor configuration questions

Hi all,

I hope to buy a studio monitor set up soon, and I am looking at 2 8" KRK monitors with a 10" KRK subwoofer.  I have a medium size room (10 by 14 ish), and I hope that whatever I get will work OK for sing alongs with 12 friends during Christmas (or whatever), and be ok in other probably bigger rooms if I move the studio..

Does anybody have any thoughts on this or other studio monitor configurations?

The most popular KRK bundle under $1000 on a certain music store website is 7" with a 10" subwoofer.  Do 7" fit better with the subwoofer or is it probably just price?

Thanks!

Re: 2.1 studio monitor configuration questions

IMHO, as the room's size is not that big, the pair of 8" monitors should be more than enough.
I have a couple of generic chinese  5" speakers and they are  able to produce quite loud sound levels (they are supposed to have a power of 50W + 50W).
With my sound card (Behringer 404HD) is set at vol = 40 (I belive that line level outputs are more or less standarized), Pianoteq at 0 dB, and the speakers at 50%, the sound is more or less appropriate for practice (something comparable to a mid sized upright).
Hope it helps,
Marcos

Edit: my speakers are supposed to be 6.5 inches, not 5" as I mentioned above. I measured with a ruler from the center to the end of the cone, but I guess this is not the correct way of taking the measurement...

Re: 2.1 studio monitor configuration questions

Simple answer to a complex problem: the size of the main monitors woofer will determine the sub's crossover frequency: 8" will go lower, so the sub has less work to do. I have an old Fostex system with two 8"s and a 10" sub and I'm very happy with it. But a 7" might have been as good. And the global output level (in dB's SPL) is another story, it depends on the power of each component.

Re: 2.1 studio monitor configuration questions

Yes. I think your plan makes sense.

With a subwoofer you can get away with smaller monitors.
I've got a 2.1 system with an amp and 5" speakers, plus an 8" subwoofer. The sub fills out the bottom end nicely.

For setting up a sub a piano is ideal to see if you're getting an even response across the range.
