Topic: New Roland V-Piano Extension

Hi,
Did anybody try this new new Roland V-Piano extension?
For me this seems the only other modeled Piano that plays somewhat in the same league as Pianoteq. I would be interested how those to compare.

Interesting sound. This reminded me of a hybrid between the electro acoustic Yamaha CP80 (especially in the bass end and low mids) and a fully acoustic grand.
It sounds nice in a synthetic way. I like the sound. Not in terms of realism to a specific model, just a nice electronic piano sound in its own right.
We can make these hybrid sounds very easily now with Pianoteq.

Maybe it was the earbuds but it sounded a little overly sharp in the upper mids. The high notes nice and open and airy.

Re: New Roland V-Piano Extension

This is only an old members opinion, (not feeling so well for the moment)

I have listened to their audio samples examples and noticed that not much has changed since 1997, I have my old Roland G-600, feeling the same ”error” here, as on my old Roland from 1997. Not much changes in sound character when playing from ff  to pp, only volume.

It is sampling even if they using some ”modeling technologies”  ……they record every second or third note and then fill in the space between by stretching the samples using ”modeling technologies” (as someone said).

On an acoustic piano, depending on how hard or soft we press the keys, the sound changes not only in volume but also in character. But here I can only here changes in volume from ff  to pp, but no much change in character. As is in my 1997 Roland too.
A beginner may not notice this and think what a nice sound (and it is in a way, but the playability?) but not acceptable to my ears. Have not used Roland since 2013. Not sampling. Pianoteq is my choise.

Well, this is what I think about it, only an amateurs opinion. And I know many people love Roland. I loved it too already in 1989 with Roland U-20, and told every friend that this is the best pianosound, until I found Pianoteq. We can all choose what we want. Good that there are many keyboards to choose from, so that everyone can be satisfied.

Best wishes,

Stig

Re: New Roland V-Piano Extension

I don't understand Rolands strategy. Having four different Piano engines, correct me if I am wrong, the Supernatural, Zen Core, Pure Acoustic and V-Piano. I think Pure Acoustic and V-Piano are fully modelled, but who knows what they are doing. Truth lies in the code and I haven't seen that . Developing four different engines seems inefficient to me, but of course I don't know all the technical details of developing also hardware. But seeing progress in modelling pianos is great for a lot of reasons.
Still I would be interested to hear if somebody did try the new "German Grand" Sound. Sound is one thing, playability is another.

Maybe they just know what can happen if you listen too much to just one guy.

Some Roland lovers don’t like physically modelled sound, Pianoteq. It is interesting that Roland uses modeling anyway, going this direction. And if they are blending samples and modeling - then, what is the point of modeling?

In the end - which keyboards sounds most like a real piano is always a matter of taste.

I like that sound, good work from Roland.
