Topic: Enchanted Island - piano solo

This is the first time I've been able to play this piece (which I wrote in my 20s) since cancer (now in remission) seven years ago partially disabled my right arm and hand. NY Steinway D Jazz, slightly modified.

Re: Enchanted Island - piano solo

Hello Steve!

I’m so glad to hear from you again, your wonderful and unique music. I like this piece, the last 45 seconds are special. Found version from 2018 too on yt, nice.
I also listened to The Brook - brilliant section from 1,22 to end

And found your Piano - Strings 2.  Wonderful !  Is it possible to get the midifile ?  Could be nice to to use Organteq in some way….you know I like to experiment.

But, I’m so sorry this cancer has happened to you. It is certainly challenging.
It’s good that you are recording/uploading music because regular activities after a cancer diagnosis is a great way to further the healing process. I wish you the best.
Keep them coming!

With warmest regards,

Stig

Re: Enchanted Island - piano solo

Hi Stig--
The doctor told me that nerve damage can take a long time to heal (sometimes never). I've had slow progress for about 6 years. A few months ago I saw an interesting video/movie about mushrooms, beautifully shot and edited, called Fantastic Fungi, which features Paul Stamets, who writes books and grows various species of mushroom which he offers as food supplements. I'm generally suspicious of food supplements but decided to try one, Lion's Mane mushroom mycelium, and was surprised to notice some rapid improvement in my nerves, so I have continued to use it. Fungi are very interesting--

Paul Stamets himself is a very interesting character. There are a couple of his Ted talks at YouTube. Here is one of them--

I found several interpretations/performances of Enchanted Island at youtube--

Live performance by AlexL83 -- I don't know him, but it's interesting seeing and hearing someone else perform this piece.

Automated performance from MIDI file

An interesting arrangement (I didn't make this arrangement) for clarinet and saxophone

My original sheet music for Enchanted Island. For this project I used the Lilypond notation app, which is a text-entry notation editor (without a graphical user interface). It was an interesting experience learning to notate using only a text editor. Nowadays if I want to notate, I use the graphical app MuseScore.

Where did you find the Piano-Strings 2? I may have renamed (or possibly forgotten) it. If you mention the URL where you found it, I'll listen and might be able to find the midi file on my computer.

Nice to hear from you. Hope you're doing well.

Fantastic news this Fungi!  Thank you Steve. I have bookmarked all.
I'm not at all surprised if you say it helps you, it's absolutely amazing what he's saying on the video.

Nice links to your music

P.S
Thank you Steve for your kindness but I have not been feeling very well for some time now. I have lost a lot of weight, am skinny and feel a bit weak and tired every morning. I have visited the doctor and if the weight still goes down, there will be bigger examinations......I  have a heavy job as a caregiver 24/7 so it may have its impact...
Have just made my contest entry ready if  my health gets worse towards the end of the year. Still playing every free minute mostly between 23.00 - 0200

Please stay well,

Stig

Oh-- That is now part of "Three Moods for piano & synthetic strings" at my Hearthis.at profile

I just played and recorded the piece in Pianoteq and saved it as a MIDI file. It can be downloaded from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VRM8Iu...sp=sharing

Regarding not feeling too well and losing weight, please treat yourself well, take the time and space you need for your own comfort and health. I've had to do that a lot myself these last dozen years or so.

Thank you for the midi file Steve. But, there is something missing?  When I drag the file to my daw track I can hear only the "melody" piano. No midi strings and not the "reverb sound", as I got before fully with the midi for strings 1     Or am i wrong? Doing it wrong?  Anyway, I shall experiment with this, a challenge

Hi Stig-- The strings sound in the piano/strings version of the piece was produced from the same midi file: in other words, 2 copies of the same file each placed on different DAW tracks, one with a piano virtual instrument (Pianoteq) and the other with some kind of string-ensemble virtual instrument, which I edited to try to blend it well with the piano sound.

So the same MIDI file produced both the piano and the accompanying strings. I was lazy: I didn't produce a separate strings orchestration. Instead, I edited the strings so that their volume would decrease the higher (more treble) notes were played, and softened their sound (removed or reduced some of the higher frequencies with an equalizer) so that the piano sound would predominate. Then I added a reverb to the main mix (the bus in the DAW) that included the sound output from both tracks, in addition to adding a separate reverb to the strings track to make them sound a little more distant, to move them backward into the sound field. The piano track (Pianoteq) had its own reverb as well, supplied by Pianoteq itself.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Steve for your detailed descriptive explanation. Now I understand. You are a genius      Let’s see what I can do…..

Best,
