Very nice job budo! I tell you why - It goes through all twelve keys in the first eight bars. It hits all the roots. It could be the first jazz tune that does that (as you say …”the chord progression is a lot of fun ... it goes all over the place! ”

I read that the Duke is a tribute to Duke Ellington. Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, like most jazz musicians, loved the music of Duke Ellington.
1959 I had a friend, Charlie, that always talked about Brubeck. Had not heard of his music. He introduced Brubeck's music to me. Nice to hear you playing Brubeck
And - Brubeck said: “The idea for ‘The Duke’ came to me when I was in the car, taking my son Chris to nursery school. The original title was: ‘The Duke Meets Darius Milhaud.’ When I first wrote it, I didn’t understand how complex it was.

thank you so much for your comments. yes the Duke is definitely Duke Ellington, one of the GOATs (he also really liked the key of Db, btw ). this tune jumps around so much it almost feels like an etude, but it doesn't sound artificial at all. the melody knits everything together. there is a lot of fun music that he created. his famous album Time Out is usually cited as being the first extensive exploration of odd meters in jazz (e.g. Take Five).
