Topic: Shenandoah (Pianoteq)

Shenandoah

"Shenandoah," perhaps one of America's most recognizable folk tunes. Like many folk songs, it is impossible to determine exactly when the song was composed, In any case, by the end of the 19th century, "Shenandoah" had achieved widespread popularity,

I have heard many versions of this song, some fast, some slow. This is my own special version of this beautiful melody.

really beautiful interpretation of this tune.  it is one of the great American folk melodies.  have you ever heard Keith Jarrett's version of it?  it's not on YT but there are vids of people playing transcriptions of it, like this one

Thanks budo for liking my interpretation.
Have not heard Jarret's version. Nice. Totally different from mine.

Stig,

This is incredibly moving and consoling. Beautiful arrangement. Shenandoah is on the playlist for the course I teach on music of the United States. It was originally a sea chantey. But not the typical chantey we think of. More of a ballad just as you interpret it.

Very sensitive playing!.

Pleasure to hear you again!

My best,
Robert

In my opinion, Claire Pasquier's version lacks the poetic quality of Jarrett's interpretation. It is too fast, too "expressive," and with too much pedal at crucial moments.

What also bothers me is measure 48, one of the most beautiful in the original, but obviously wrong in Douglas Gould's transcription. I really wonder how it is that so many follow that transcription blindly.

Fortunately, there are other transcriptions, such as the one below. By the way, there now appears to be an officially approved transcription (Scott Music), which I just ordered.
