Topic: Digital piano headphones or HI FI headphone

anyone use Roland or Yamaha digital piano headphones or are hi fi headphones better for pianoteq?

Re: Digital piano headphones or HI FI headphone

One friend advice:

Do not buy a headphone without test it yourself, and I mean test it connected to a digital piano, testing the bass response with careful.
Do not test with a music CD !

I quit of invest in headphones for this reason. I couldn't find a model I liked it piano sound response. Ok, I coudn't test many models, but all models I ever tested sounded like crap to me.

My strongest (but unpopular) opinion is that the final link in a chain like headphones or speakers is the least important thing in case of actual "playing" the Pianoteq, anything will do, just have to be reliable enough, i.e. not a total garbage with faulty wires, disappearing and-or distorted sound, etc. For music listening or audio engineering it is the whole other story.

Yes, agree with Beto-Music, trying them out is best - and with AKM too - if listening or working with audio, that will factor in.

Some 'consumer' headphones (even cheap ones) may sound "sweeter" to many people just to listen to piano or any other audio. They are often given EQ curves to make this effect.

Many pro headphones can sound "flat" to people because they are intended to give consistent frequency response - and so even top line expensive "studio reference quality" headphones may not be everyone's best choice.

Same with monitors.. choose studio "flat response" monitors if your goal is consistent recording and mixing - but be aware that other 'consumer' speakers may be your personal better preference, for you as a listener. (instead of going for flat frequency response, these can be designed to be sweet and sugary - again testing what you like is best).

I prefer flat monitors and headphones but it's because it's so long using them which makes me feel that I can enjoy everything in the audio.. but whenever I finish some audio and experience it on a good stereo system or nice consumer headphones, it can be a treat. In fact, using the studio equipment is our best way to output audio which can sound best on consumer gear (at least with reproducible consistency).

Maybe or maybe not ..., it's highly subjective (it depends on what you enjoy when you play). Playing with good audiophile headphones can be a real pleasure, Pianoteq can quite deserve the best of headphones, especially with its version 7 and its NY Steinway. But if you can't stand wearing headphones for long, especially if it's a bit heavy, it can be very unpleasant  and tiring after a few tens of minutes on the keyboard.
In any case, before ordering headphones, it is indeed very important to try them. For headphones, especially at the top of the range (but not only), it's a bit like an instrument, each copy can sound in a unique way ... in a subjectively pleasant or unpleasant way for you.

I'm the polar opposite. I suggest that after the keyboard action the playback system is the most important element, even when you are playing. The quality of the sound actually changes how you play, and how you perceive a performance.
Playback levels also dramatically influence which presets work for you.

Good headphones and/or good loudspeakers make a huge difference. No digital piano's internal speakers (no matter what price point) will equal a great pair or active monitors or a quality Hi-Fi system and this is transformative.

For me, too, now the question of choosing quality headphones is important. But I'm choosing between stereo and 7.1, I'm currently studying this issue. When the opportunity arises, I am protesting several models in an electronics store the other day.

Re: Digital piano headphones or HI FI headphone

I started pianoteq with the closed focal spirit one. My ears were very hot after 20 minutes and the feeling was not very good. I then took out my old hifi sennheiser opened HD540 600 ohms and then it became spectacular... a large image and an exceptional comfort, I forget it in a few seconds and I can play hours having the feeling to have nothing on the ears, just the piano in front of me. I recently took advantage of a promotion on the HD599 which is good but reaches neither the comfort nor the sound nor the realism of the HD540.
I think opened headphones are better than closed one for realism and confort.
