Topic: Heaven (Pianoteq)

another tune from the book.  this one is a very beautiful but not very often played tune by Duke Ellington.  probably not many singers do it because the melody is rather tricky.  still i wish i heard it more often!

Re: Heaven (Pianoteq)

Thank you budo for your beautiful interpretation. This is the best piano cover I've heard of this piece. I like it much.

I found out that,
The piece is from Ellington's Second Sacred Concert, New York on January 19, 1968, but no recording of this actual performance has surfaced.
Then recorded on January 22 and February 19, 1968. This concert is the first time Swedish singer Alice Babs recorded with the Ellington Orchestra. In the concert she sang "Heaven" .
She had an unusually large tonal range, according to her own account three and a half octaves !!! As a child I listened much to Babs singing. (Swedish talking people in Finland is listening much to music from Sweden).

But, here is a version I tried with Organteq, but I think it is not good, I don’t know why I uploaded it…..but I put it in here..... at least an unique version, for no one has played it with Organ, Organteq

Re: Heaven (Pianoteq)

thank you for your generous comment.  i wish i could hear Duke play this tune.  he was a fabulous piano player but today it seems we remember him more as a bandleader/composer.  a lot of modern jazz harmony either comes directly from him or has its roots in things he did.

i really enjoyed your organ take on the tune!  i thought, instead of being "not very good," that it was very good.  it really worked well with Organteq and with that instrument.  it almost sounded like a theatre organ.

thanks also for sharing the YT video and for discussion about the singer.  i wasn't familiar with this performance and with her stuff.  she must have had a lot of classical training to be able to pull that off!

Re: Heaven (Pianoteq)

I always admire people who can play Jazz so beautifully. Thanks, budo.
I can play piano concerto, but I can never play jazz like yours.
