Topic: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

From a private group, so I smooshed out the other user. I remember for the longest time thinking "it sounds good, but it sounds like Pianoteq." I think version 6 is where they really started nailing it. I used it in my first film [Jaz The Rapper - We Will Shine/Shades of Majenta], even though v7 was out before publishing. It just fit so nicely with the orchestra. Version 7 is better still, and since this is solo piano, it was worth the upgrade. As mentioned, I did some major EQ moves, but the character is still there.

amazing!

could you share with us how you captured the IR (is that 'impulse response'?) for that room?

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

or possibly share the IR files?  always looking for cool new reverbs.

it would also be great to hear more about how you EQd it and incorporated it in your recording project.  i wish i knew more about recording, so i always like hearing about it in this forum.

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

Thanks y'all!

I coordinated with a local high school to let me in the gym at 5am on a weekend. (Basketball team would start practice at 7.) I brought one of my studio monitor speakers, played back a rising sine wave tone, captured it with a small condenser stereo pair. Basically followed the instructions for Waves IR. The speaker was maybe 6-10ft away from a wall, and the mics near the middle of the court, a good distance away.

That's pretty neat showcase.

Had to go back to the session. EQ was a slight cut to the lows around 100hz, MASSIVE boost to the low-lows down to 20hz. There's little info there, even +30dB doesn't sound crazy. I probably could've/should've used a sub generator. Modest cut in the mids around 700, massive boost to the highs pretty much everything above 3k. Similarly, not much info beyond 7 or 8k.

It just occurred to me that maybe swapping mics would've broadened the frequency response. I once toyed with the different mics and preferred the tone of the default setup. Though I wasn't looking at a spectrum analyzer or listening for hifi-ness.

I'll have to look into the IR files. Don't know if they're usable with anything other than Waves IR. They were of the sweep variety, not the clap or bang type.

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

That's really useful info about the EQ! I was quite surprised that you boosted the highs because the Bluthner is already quite 'fizzy' up there - but I guess the low bass boost helps to compensate. I'm still learning EQ. If I use it at all I only make minimal changes because I want to avoid an over-processed sound. Any info like this is always welcome, because most EQ tutorials seem to assume that you'll be using piano in a mix, rather than solo.

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

Congratulations! Pianoteq is a real instrument. The True modeling.

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

I believe the continuous progress of pianoteq's quality relies in the balance of recognition and crítics, which together instigante dedication, perceverance and criativity.
When some few people crticize pianoteq, the team work hard to refine the engine. Then when the public spot the quality raising, and compliment the team for the achievement, the team get self steem and more energy enthusiasm.

I believe pianoteq will became better and better, silencing the haters. Not just that, but in some point it can became better than real pianos, creating natural sounds but at same time reaching characteristics piano manufacturers only dreamed about.

Bravo Beto-Music !

I have probably said something like this a long time ago, but in that case I say again, as my compliment to Modartt,

I remember that I learned something from my pupils. They wanted to do things at speed that was comfortable for them, in own pace. I think Modartt have their own schedule and have found the place in the sun. And they are surrounded by us in this forum -  hopefully we give them a gentle push every now and then and help them keep the enthusiasm   Yes, the enthusiasm is important.

Best wishes,

Stig

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

I have a funny feeling that the next 'big leap' for Pianoteq may be just around the corner. It's almost a year since the last new instrument release (Petrof Mistral), and you can be sure that the Modartt team haven't been just twiddling their thumbs since then

I would also like to see what Modartt could possibly do with virtual wind instruments, if they are sensible with pricing,  like they are with Pianoteq.

Re: Best compliment Modartt could receive?

Yes! And strings and guitars too, as long as they can keep on refining the piano models.

Yes, those too, eventually.  Wind, keyboard and drums have appropriate controllers on the market.
Guitars can be played on keyboards, MPE keyboards and wind controllers. MIDI guitar controllers not so much.

One of their team has already been involved with wind instrument modelling. I noticed the same of AAS too, but I would have particularly high expectations in terms of realism from Modartt (and say a fun varied instrument from AAS).

For the film, where the piano is both solo and in a mix, I did generally the same thing. Except not such a big boost to the bottom because I was using v6 which I think has a bigger, dare I say richer, bottom than v7. Within Pianoteq, the only thing I changed was increasing the hammer noise for the rap parts to make it more percussive, especially with the added reverb.

I'm no expert, btw. These are my first and second productions ever.

Ackshully, I just remembered the etude is also at the end of the film. lol
