Topic: Yamaha GrandTouch S

I played this action today and compared it to the higher end GrandTouch Clavinova actions. I played the 765 with the GrandTouch S and the 735 also with the GrandTouch S.

I found that the 'S' version of the GrandTouch (plastic white keys) has a very definite bottoming out which I prefer to the more softer - dare I say spongier - actions. This action seems to be the 'GHS' of the GrandTouch range of actions. Some people prefer the GHS to the GHE, NW, NWX etc.

I highly recommend trying this action out when in the market for a digital piano. It may not be your cup of tea, but then again it may be so.

I intend to try it with Pianoteq sometime.

If anyone here on the forum owns a GrandTouch S equipped piano, I'd be very interested to hear your opinions on this action.

Warmest regards to all,

Chris

Re: Yamaha GrandTouch S

I have the CLP 745 that has this action. And I love it. I tried a bunch of acoustic upright pianos in the store and this action came quite close to Yamaha's own uprights. Although the actions on a Boston upright 132 or even a yamaha baby grand are just so much better (at 6000-10000$ of course), I think Grandtouch-S is great at the price point for what it does. I also prefer this over kawai's actions. I know people love the kawais, probably because they are used to actions similar to kawai uprights but I didn't like those as much (speaking of acoustic uprights themselves).

I am a beginner and so I could use some more finger strength, but that being said, i found it to be a lot easier to play 7th chords and extended voicings on this action than on my previous DP which was a casio. Only other that would come close would be Korg's RH3 on LP-380 or Korg D1's action. For someone on a budget, I highly recommend LP-380 as well.
PS - I have not tried high end Roland actions though since none were available in my region, but the cheaper ones like on FP-30X or RP-102, this one is totally worth the extra money and upgrade.

I do think this same action but some extra pivot depth would have been great, to bring it closer to Boston 132 but that's just wishful thinking. I highly recommend this keybed for playing with pianoteq.

It's gone on sale for $800 @ adorama during holidays, hard to beat.
