Topic: Pianoteq Limiter

Hi,

It's me or snake oil ? I don't like the limiter with threshold at - 12 dB and with no big headroom in most of default presets.

( I prefer to modify the default volume 0dB to - 9 dB and set the threshold at - 3 dB for most existing presets)

Sure most people doesn't like Pianoteq at FF/FFF because of this limiter...

I think i get a more natural sound in Pianoteq (And i love the sound of the Steinway B of 7.5.2) , when i just avoid the in built limiter, and set preset at - 16 LUFS :

here a Steinway B .fxp  at - 16 LUFS (Integrated) with PPP to FFF in same track or live playing (measured with youlean free meter at the main output with a virtual audio cabble)

Re: Pianoteq Limiter

It's not you, it something that should probably be written in capital in the manual, together with disabling level compensation for close mics only. It would eliminate a good 75% complaints for the sound.

Re: Pianoteq Limiter

The limiter is OK as a 'safety valve' for live playing, but quite a while ago I learned that it's better to turn it off for recording and set the output fairly low (I always go to -12dB). I experimented with less aggressive settings for the limiter, but it always seems to add a certain amount of distortion whatever you do with it.
BTW, the Youlean Loudness Meter (as mentioned by Olivier) is a brilliant tool for understanding what's going on with your loudness levels - highly recommended.

Re: Pianoteq Limiter

I don't understand this topic. Is my understanding here correct?:

If the level meter is in the green zone, then everything is good. Nothing to see here and nothing to worry about.

If the level meter is RED, this is bad. Then you can worry about limiters and LUFSes and such.

Also, if I export the audio on Pianoteq using the "high quality settings" option, is all of this taken care of for me?

Is there something more to this or am I missing something?
