Topic: Pianoteq 7 (Stage) - Steinway D sounds like harpsichord

Hello,

I just got the Stage version of Pianoteq 7.
Somehow it sounds a bit like a harpsichord. Does anybody know the problem ?
I'm using a normal midi cable which connects my piano with the PC. I've also turned off effects as delay and EQ.

It's so disappointing because the sound samples convinced me to buy that license...

I've uploaded my record here: https://easyupload.io/ny0jui

You can hear it especially in the left hand.

Thanks in advance for your help!

That doesn't sound like a harpsichord, to me. It sounds like a piano. It does sound compressed, I can hear tonal changes but the volume level seems a bit flat. Is that what you're referring to?

Try many of the presets to see if they feel the same way, to you.

Upload it elsewhere, like soundcloud, please.

Thanks for the answer. But to me it doesnt sound like the preview audios at all. I‘ve got the problem with all presets.

Have you tried increasing the dynamics slider?

Hi pianism,

I opened your sample in Izotope RX9 and the spectrogram shows that there is almost no audio information above about 3.5k.  It does indeed sound a little strange.  How did you record it?

Cheers,
Richard

Re: Pianoteq 7 (Stage) - Steinway D sounds like harpsichord

Did you check your cables and/or connections?
I also have sometimes a very "thin&silent&mono" sound on whatever software instrument I use.
But just moving and rattling the cables a bit resolves the problem (however only temporary)

I know, it may sound a little wise-guy-isch and this is what I thought when I had an answer to a complaint about bad signal-quality of the cableTV some time ago.
But getting a new coax-cable did indeed help.

I am using a midi to USB A cable to connect my PC with the piano. Recording is done with the standalone software of Pianoteq.

I will try to reconnect again but i have also tried to record with some other piano vst and only pianoteq has that strange sound.

I‘ve adjusted all settings in the stage version. Or do i really need to get the pro version to get more options?

I'm a happy P'teq Stage 7 user who relies on the new NYSteinway.
AFIK, Stage loads presets made on pro, you just don't have the ability to make certain changes. So, I wouldn't be upgrading just yet.

Have you loaded other instruments in demo mode to see if you get the same perceived harpsi effect?

It is possible to obtain a sound like this with a bad sound driver selected in the options-> device, or with an insufficient sample rate (use at least 44 000hz and a sufficient audio buffer). It is also important in the options -> perfs to select a sufficient INTERNAL sample rate (48,000hz, not the minimum value). At the level of the main panel, a maximum volume risks putting too much strain on the limiter, ditto with a too low dynamic value a lack of contrast between the loud and weak sounds as with an exaggerated compression. In any case, if we avoid these bad parameters and that we do not change the equalizer settings, with the standard presets the quality of reproduction of the piano is as good with Pianoteq stage as in the demonstrations on the site. .

Re: Pianoteq 7 (Stage) - Steinway D sounds like harpsichord

Hi Pianism,
Just listened to your demo song that should show the "harpsichordy" sound.
Like others, I don't hear a problem, the piano sounds good to me. Maybe it lacks a little treble but it has a good bass.
But the harpsichord sound is just the opposite, lots of trebles and no "boom-bass".
So I would say that it isn't Pianoteq's fault and the sound-problem lies somewhere "behind" the generated sound.
Again .... just guessing, like this afternoon ... sorry :-(

And about the pro-version: yes, you can tweak the piano-sound much more then in the stage-version, but it won't correct your specific sound problem.
The basic and unedited sound in pro and stage is probably the same.
