Topic: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Here's the original setting for the Erard (1922) that comes with LIViR - it only has 3 settings...

Default Player Setting for Erard

Le Courant Limpide (Erard Player)

..and here's my attempt at a forth setting. Just an insignificant upload demonstrating a simple change in microphone placement, but does it sound good, I wonder ???

Stereo Setting for Erard

Le Courant Limpide (Erard Smilie Stereo)

What can you come up with ???

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Using the 'stereo' setting above I changed the room reverb from Small to Medium

Erard Stereo Setting with Medium-sized Room Reverb

Tendre Fleur (Erard Smilie Stereo with Medium Room Reverb)

Does it still sound clean ???

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

..and there's more experimentation...

Erard like New Smilie Setting

Ballad (Erard like new Smilie Setting)

Ballad (Erard like new Smilie Setting with difference Smilie Stereo II Setting)

La Bergeronnette (Erard like new Smilie Setting with different Smilie Stereo II Setting and Large Room Reverb)

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

I like the player-style setting in "Ballad (Erard like new Smilie Setting with difference Smilie Stereo II Setting)", especially as you tip-toe down the key board from treble to bass in stereo.

I also like the performance-hall style "La Bergeronnette (Erard like new Smilie Setting with different Smilie Stereo II Setting and Large Room Reverb)".  Reverb is pleasant, and not over-done.

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Feel free to upload these to fxp corner, Smilie - I think quite a few people will enjoy trying them. They sound pretty good in your recorded extracts.
On the subject of presets, it would be great if Modartt could occasionally select a few of the very best contributions in fxp corner and make them 'official' presets. What do others think about this idea?

Thank you dklein, that's very nice of you to say.

Yes, it would be nice to try them for ourselves.

Maybe a "forum favourites" section. OTOH it might discourage any further investigation in the FXB section if you've heard what's regarded by Modartt as "the best of" already.

We wouldn't want Modartt being accused of forum member favouritism either!
Flip side of the coin people could be offended if their presets aren't represented.

I put a simple blend of the Errard and the Pleyel in the FXB section some months back. The OP might like that.

It's great with experiments and new ideas about sound. Many thanks to Smilie and everyone that uploads fxp files. But, as Modartt says in the Welcome to fxp corner for customized presets:
”They are created and uploaded by actual users”. So, the forum is for us users. I think it's good as it is. We can all upload fxp’s and we can all use them.
Well, that’s what I think about it

Here's the base FXP...

Erard Player (New 01).FXP

Erard Player (New 01) basic FXP - no reverb - demo

..to which you will need to add the stereo microphone setting...

Erard Stereo 002.mfxp

..and one of the following small hall settings (or your own)...

Small Hall (01)

DEMO - Erard Player (New 01) + Erard Stereo 002 + Small Hall (01)

Small Hall (03)

DEMO - Erard Player (New 01) + Erard Stereo 002 + Small Hall (02)

Small Hall (03)

DEMO - Erard Player (New 01) + Erard Stereo 002 + Small Hall (03)

I don't know whether separating out the various elements is useful or not? Feel free to comment...

Enjoy !

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

A softer 'new' setting with more resinous case...

The demo of my "Erard Player (New 02)" below is set to 'Dry Room' reverb and has a different Stereo microphone setting (Erard Stereo 003) ...

Heller Op 47 No 1 - Erard Player (New 02)

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

I think it would be better to upload the fxp with the 'Erard Stereo' mic setting applied, as some users may be unaware of it if they don't see your forum post. You could add a note saying something like 'try your own reverb, or one of mine from Shared files'.
Regarding my 'best of fxp corner' idea, I've sort of found the answer to my own question. It's in the Extended Search feature, which I have to admit I haven't really used before - it's great!

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

I found the fragmented FXPs interesting and useful, but noted that I had to use them with some care, as loading the 'base instrument' after the microphones then overwrites the microphones (and the reverb, I believe).  Also, I made sure that the microphones were save as a microphone preset, so that I could use them on other instruments.  Interesting how you backed the treble mic away from the piano, rather than just lowering its volume.

No, they are separate and the base instrument is set as for the Erard Player with it's reverb and microphone settings. The separate reverbs and microphone placements are there to be used on any instrument. I used them in combination above for illustrative purposes only.

Glad you liked the 'gift' here's another (there's a short demo on the FXP page)...

Erard Player (Bright 01)

This could be used as a basis for a more ruined version - just slide the bottom switch over from 'Mint' to 'Worn' for effect !

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Cheers Smilie, I will check them out. ☺️

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Thanks for reminding me that the Erard (1922) piano is so lovely. I need to reach for it more often!

MacPro OSX 10.12.6 (Sierra)

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

I like what you've done with your new "Erard Player" preset, kind of modernised the sound, but keeping some of the boxy bass character. The brighter version reminding me of the honky tonk Cowboy movie pianos.  ☺️

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Smilie, did you put your Erard Player 02 preset somewhere?  Perhaps I overlooked it in you forum posts, and I didn't see it in the FXP corner.

Sorry, thought I'd already done it - here it is...

Erard Player (New 02) - with softer hammers

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Thanks.  Whenever my connection to Modartt's server wakes up, it should be downloadable.  Until then - off to work!  Life gets in the way.  ;-)

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

I was reading/listening to this thread again and saw Smilie’s question - ”What can you come up with ???”

I’m using Erard Player.  I wanted a sound that’s a bit closer, a bit fuller, a bit ”wider”. And this, what I came up wit, sounds good in my headphones.

I changed:
impedance 1,20     string length 2,00   sympathetic resonance 1,30 (”unfortunately” it is something that I generally think I always want more and more of ....        mint 0,10   reverb medium hall   stereo width 1,13   compensation off

And Smilie’s other question - does it sound good? (the goal was to get a bit fuller, a bit closer, a bit wider.....)

Best,

Stig

Edit: Forgot, I moved microphones a little little closer to piano

Re: LIViR Erard (1922) Needs New Settings

Had a play with the original recording setting today.  I have just uploaded a version with stretched strings and the lid removed, together with different microphone positions and a little tuning.
