The Best Of Ragtime Favorites ( you probably not have heard)
I intend to collect the following songs here:
Rag-Time Dance
The Easy Winners
Heliotrope Bouquet
The Cascades
Sun Flower Slow Drag
The Nonpareil
Today: Sun Flower Slow Drag
Dear listener / reader,
After playing 10 ragtime pieces, I found this one surprisingly difficult to learn.
And Solace is even worse, for me, didn’t put it on the list yet.
So, I made the music sound as a "music box" or as an old piano role that goes a little unevenly, not so well tuned… ( to cover my difficulties
Slow drag - a popular dance in slow tempo originating in New Orleans in the late 19th century The slow drag was mentioned throughout the ragtime period, but never in significant numbers.
People play this piece fast, but it is a slow dance. I listened to "A real slow drag" from Scott Joplin's Opera "Treemonisha" performed by Houston Grand Opera Orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller who is the arranger of 1911 Joplin's piano version. And I have done some research….
So in my opinion it has to be played slowly (as the name says, too).
I think this became the second ”Pianoteq music box” in this forum. keynote 1157 had the first one
If you need a great gift idea for someone special, a music box might be a good choice. Don’t have to buy an expensive box. Now we have ”the box” music here. Unique, fun. Just send this music as a link to someone. Birthday or some special occasion…
As always, recorded with headphones.

2) The Cascades
Joplin - The Cascades (NY Steinway Prepared)
The Cascades was written to celebrate the spectacular water fountains and displays at the St Louis Worlds Fair in 1904. You can almost see the tumbling water and feel its splash in this piece.
This piece is like a tone poem, Joplin looked at the fountain and the water and went to his apartment and wrote the piece (Rick Benjamin).
Someone said Joplin never smiled, but he laughed out loud in his music. Maybe you can experience that in this piece ( it should probably be played a bit faster but I couldn’t).
I like to try different versions of different pianos. Have not used this one before. NY Steinway Prepared (a bit modified).
As a joke: This piano is so old and much used, so it could not be tuned 440Hz, it's a half step below, the tuning screws did not hold

4) Heliotrope Bouquet "Heliotrope Bouquet" is a 1907 rag composed by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin. The first section of the piece is unique in ragtime for its structure, rhythm and melody. This and the second section were most likely contributed by Louis Chauvin, while the third and fourth section show Joplin’s style of composing.
Enjoy,
