Topic: Possible error in installation .exe file: Can't keep old version

After downloading and clicking on the exe file for version 7.4.0, I see a choice between keeping the old version or over-writing the old version. If I choose to keep the old version, the installation ends. The dialog box simply vanishes and nothing more happens. (Choosing to over-write the old version works fine, however.)

Am a bit puzzled too as this did not show up when installing 7.30 over another version. Is an uninstall needed to run 7.40?

The new version seems to have over-written the previous version. However, I had a still older version, version 6, also installed. The new installation let it alone.

Re: Possible error in installation .exe file: Can't keep old version

i'm using linux, so this is probably not very helpful, but ... there the installer unpacks into a folder named Pianoteq 7 that sits in the home directory.  to save old versions what i do first is rename this folder (to say Pianoteq 7.3.0) and then unpack.  the new installation goes into Pianoteq 7 and doesn't overwrite the old.   v.6 always unpacked into a folder named Pianoteq 6 by default so that wouldn't overwrite v.7.  something similar must be going on under the hood in Windows.  if you can find where v.7 is getting unpacked you could first just rename the folder so that it doesn't get clobbered.

Re: Possible error in installation .exe file: Can't keep old version

I've just run into this myself as well with the Windows 7.4.0 installer, I thought it wasn't working.

It's the "Do you want to uninstall previous version" wording that is confusing, as I still have a copy of Pianoteq 6 installed and thought it was going to uninstall that. If it said something clearer like "You have Pianoteq 7.0.3 installed, this installer will overwrite it & update it to Pianoteq 7.4.0, do you want to proceed?", I would have understood what was happening, and that it was just overwriting v7 and leaving my v6 install untouched.

Re: Possible error in installation .exe file: Can't keep old version

On MacOs no such question is asked and the previous version with the same first digit (here 7.x.y) is silently overwritten. The question should be more precisely enunciated since the goal is to upgrade the current version (first digit) and/or fix bugs, not affect previous ones (here 6.x.y or earlier) that are left as is. On MacOs there are usually no uninstaller since most applications are self contained and moving an icon to the recycle bin is all that is needed. Maybe for Windows there is more cleanup to be done and it's better to get permission before, or simply it's the norm to advise of the overwriting.

The only thing that is left on MacOs when upgrading is the previous version's *.prefs files.

I agree, the wording is confusing and could be clearer.
