Topic: Kawai MP9500 in 2020 ??

Hi, my neighbour wants to part with his Kawai MP9500.
Is this still a good buy in 2020 ?? (If all works like it should)
Or can I better look for an entry level Piano like a Korg D1 or Kawai es110, and play pianoteq with one of these ??
I want to use it with software piano's only, so the sounds doesn't bother me much.
Maybe for a quick spin when I'm waiting, and don't want to boot the computer.

Hope that to hear what you think.

Thx in advance !!!

Hi Sigasa, thx for replying.

The MP9500 was given to his son, so unfourtunatly it's no longer available.
I looked at the Roland you suggested, but for about 200 more I could buy a VPC1, ES8 or MP7se.

Or wait a few months, for the successors on the Kawai range.

I have a Kawai MP11SE. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any "successors" from Kawai. They move so slow in developing stage pianos. I'm probably going to jump ship soon because a MP12 or VPC2 are nowhere in sight.

Re: Kawai MP9500 in 2020 ??

I have an MP8 which still works perfectly. Particularly if you want to use Pianoteq anyways instead of the internal piano sound, these stage pianos should be fine for the next decades to come. Sure, the keybeds slightly improve here and there with every generation. But this doesn't mean the old models are suddently bad.
Grand pianos did and still do improve, too. But who would replace a year 2000 Steinway D just because there is a new 2020 model with slightly improved mechanics? Still a lot of fun can be had with the year 2000 Steinway, even in 2020.
Same with an MP9500, when gotten for a good price and in good shape this should be worth a consideration.

If a notebook is too much of a hazzle, then a neat thing to have is imho a "Pianoteq soundmodule" with MIDI in and audio out that just produces a fixed plug and play piano sound. E.g. a Raspberry Pi with a suitable sound card (e.g. PiSound) can be used to build one.

I find the Kawai MP-9500 very beautiful aesthetically. Imposing design. It remains to be seen whether the buttons, controls accept assign.

But, since your neighbor no longer wants to trade it, it is worth thinking about a Kawai VPC. I have a Roland A-88, but my dream of consumption is a Kawai VPC-1.

What are you thinking if the company doesn’t release anything new?

True, what to expect from a new release?

Although I have never tried it, VPC 1 looks perfect in my opinion.

How to improve what is already excellent? What would VPC 2 look like? With optical sensors instead of contact rubbers, maybe.

...with a GFIII action and MIDI 2.0 support (I use my MP11SE almost exclusively as a MIDI controller. The only reason that I didn't buy a VPC1 is that it didn't have a GF action or better.)

Re: Kawai MP9500 in 2020 ??

I bought an ES110 specifically to play Pianoteq, and I find the action quite suitable. It's smooth and offers sufficient resistance, but is not laborious to play. It is quite expressive.
