Topic: Good mono setting? Problem with microphone settings?

Hi all

Since i'm using my own single monitor on stage, I am trying to get a decent mono settings.
I first tried the "mono" the setting built in pianoteq - and I really don't like what I hear. It sounds like there are many phase cancellations etc...
It's really "dead" compared to the other settings.

Then i tried playing with the C3 out-of-the-box, listening to it only on output 1, and I encountered a strange phenomon:
eventhough microphone 2 is sent only to output 2, and i shouldn't hear it, turning it on/off changes the sound i hear!! how is that possible? is it a bug?

I'm now trying to use two microphones in the "recording" settings sent to ouput 1, one close, and and far ...

any suggestions here?

best regards,
Eran

Re: Good mono setting? Problem with microphone settings?

Eran, this is not a bug, it is because (quoting the manual, section 9.6 About microphones position): "in order to make it easier to find good places for the microphones, a quick local optimization of the geometrical parameters of the model (the distances used for the calculation) is performed automatically as soon as you have placed the microphones". In other words, we tried to take advantage of being in the virtual world for solving some recording issues that one observes in real life, as for example when you listen to a piano in some live situation like radio or TV show and hear piercing overtones (that is, recordings that have not been worked and polished in detail by sound engineers whose work is sometimes an authentic art).

Re: Good mono setting? Problem with microphone settings?

Thanks Philippe,

So i understand that even if a microphone's volume is completely shut down, it's very existence (turning it on/off) may slightly affect the positions of other microphones that are "on"
?

thanks

Re: Good mono setting? Problem with microphone settings?

yes, that's correct, the volume of the mics is not taken into account for the optimization, only their state (on/off).

Sooooo - is this why with my counter-intuitive (physics-wise) setup with one mic above and one mic below, that it seems to provide a very complete and intimate sound?

Or is it because my rather old (and not very good inner ears) are fooling me?

On second thought, maybe you shouldn't answer this one.

Glenn, yes, that might be the reason why the sound is improved, no worry with your ears
