Topic: not getting the sound right (PianoTeq 6)

Hi,

I have PianoTeq 6, which I use together with a Nord Piano. Even though I calibrated the velocity curve multiple times, I don't seem to get the sound right. If I compare it to the demo's on the PianoTeq website, my sounds end up kind of nasal? Also compared to the piano sound included in my Nord Piano it sounds kind of thin. The sound of my Nord Piano sound much fuller.

What can I do to fix this?

Re: not getting the sound right (PianoTeq 6)

Well... you can record a MP3 and post it together with the FXP of the model & settings you used for the recording.

Thanks for your reply! Good idea!

So, here is the Nord sound. I have a Nord Piano, the sound is the Royal Grand 3D: https://soundcloud.com/jan-willem-tulp/nordpiano

Here is the PianoTeq 6, the sound is the Steinway B Improv (default settings, except for setting it to Binaural): https://soundcloud.com/jan-willem-tulp/pianoteq

The velocity curve that I am using is 1,0 51,32 70,64 102,96 122,127 127,127

Don't mind the "music" I'm actually playing, it's about the sound of the PianoTeq, which, as mentioned, doesn't seem to sound as full as for instance the built in sound of the Nord.

I hope you hear what I mean. I have to admit that I experience the effect stronger while playing than listening to the recordings, but it's still there. And the playing itself is the joy of it, right?

I hope someone can help...

Thank you in advance!

Above links appear broken.

Have you any downloaded MIDI files unassociated with your keyboard that you can use in a test?  If you load a separate MIDI file recorded by a different keyboard and attempt to play it in the software, that might become a starting point when you begin to troubleshoot.

You may want to run a test with a default preset selected that you can compare with the same preset example on one of the demo pages.

Re: not getting the sound right (PianoTeq 6)

Probably, if you experiment with a default preset, you’re able to tell whether or not its name changes into an italicized form.  That indicates any preset has been somehow altered.

Tinny sounds in PIANOTEQ standalone occur whenever the MIDI file played within it or MIDI sent from a keyboard contains any number of extraneous MIDI messages (Bank Select, Program Change, Controller, Etc.).  Possibly you need to check the latest MIDI messages that appear in the PIANOTEQ Options window and under the MIDI heading  —for the keyboard controller messages that have been sent.  If you mouse click on a message you’ll have display options presented to you, including the one that clears the message window for you to start a new list and view only the most recent MIDI messages from your keyboard playing.

When sometimes I get a tinny sound, along with a modified preset name (italicized), in the PIANOTEQ Options window, the selection Minimalist, for, Global MIDI Mapping, alleviates such occurrences altogether.  For any preset to return though to its original factory settings, on the preset name, a minimum two (2) second long mouse click is necessary.

Thank you very much. These MIDI Mapping settings is definitely something I haven't tried yet.

I am away from my piano for a few days, so I'll check early next week. Thanks a lot!

P.S. I fixed the links

Also, to match any presets with those appearing as demos, you’ll need to do a reset of software VELOCITY.

Indeed have you any intention to save the MIDI you used and make it a MIDI file available as a shared file within Shared files?

With it others probably easily will see whether or not they can get results very similar to yours.
