Topic: Minimum playable MIDI signal achieved

Hi All,

Since I'm not being able to get less than 25 while softly playing complete passages (I can hardly ahieve less values when individually stroke but not playable at all), I wondered what you guys getting from your controllers when trying to play pianissimo?

My pianos is a Kawai CA97 (GF2) and while I can get pianissimo through the onboard sounds, I cannot get the pianissimo signal through MIDI, even playing as softly in both cases.

Also, adjusting the velocity curve so I get the complete dynamic range, doesn't result in a pleasing playing experience, despite getting the whole range..

Regards,
David

Your piano should be able to produce all levels from 1 to 127. In my case (Korg) I have noticed that its various touch curves are not bypassed when I use it with Pianoteq. So if I select a 'heavier' curve on the Korg, the range of the midi signals sent to Pianoteq is altered. It can be further influenced by PT but that gives results that are difficult to predict. In other words, it's important that you set your dp to a straight line 'curve'. Normally this will be the default.
Your Kawai will be in that default every time you switch it on, unless you have made and stored a 'user touch curve' for a particular sound. It will then allways use that for that sound, even if the piano has been switched off. See page 83 of your user manual. Could it be that you (perhaps inadvertently) saved such a personal curve in the past, and that your piano is using that now without you being aware?

My touch cruve is the standard one on the Kawai, never had to change it.

The thing is, I can get MIDI signal from 0 to 25 but it's not playable, in the sense that I only get them randomly while trying as soft as possible on the keys, but no steady playing is possible.

Pianissimo passages are possible with onboard sounds while they're impossible with a straight curve on PTQ..

Re: Minimum playable MIDI signal achieved

Try other adjusts on your Kawai, like light touch, and then try to find a velocity curves to pianoteq to each one, and then choose the best.

Also, velocity curves it's not just a curve (don't laught), since sometimes it need to be straight, like rise the lower left Adjust Anchor point in vertical position, to it raise in  the vertical left line of the graphic.
Raise it until you start to get the PPP. After you set this (satrt get PPP) you can think about pull or push a Anchor point in the middle of the diagonal line of the velocity curve, to make the overal velocity lighter or heavier.
