Topic: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

What have fellow VCP1 owners found to be the best NOTE-OFF curve for use with Pianoteq?

I actually think this is a critical setting, but have been struggling to find the sweet spot for it.

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

SL88 guy here but I have a flat curve bottoming out at (0, 15) on the low end...I find the release to be overly long any lower than that, and find it difficult to differentiate much in the rest of the curve apart from avoiding a harsh mute if I pick my hands up slowly from a long sustain or something.

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

After a long journey, I settled on something like this ..:

Global Note-Off Velocity = [0, 127; 72, 127]

But you can get 15 ..

And this is necessary because Kawai periodically generates Note-Off = 0 events. And sometimes some notes are not damped.

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

Morning All,

Could you please elaborate on the "note-off" capability. I do own a VPC1 and fail to detect any difference, I know I am a complete noob at the piano.. I tried calibrating the velocity in Pianoteq with horrible results - too loud and abrupt, so I use (60, 19) as suggested in the velocity section of the forum. But the Note-Off feature is still unfathomable to me, can't feel any difference.

Any suggestions of how to test/experiment with it so I can feel audibly any changes..!?

Thanks!

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

Hi CircleOfFifths. First set the note-off curve in Pianoteq to 0 minimum,127 max (same curve as note-on default). Play a note (mid volume) and release the key very slow. Play the same note (and same volume again) but release the note fast. Repeat until you hear, and are aware of the note having a longer time to stop.

You might find a curve 25 minimum,127 maximum (0,25 127,127) for example to be more practical in normal playing, scherbakov.al suggestion in this thread seems a good one.

Don't concentrate on the note-on here, listen to the release sound.

Nick

EDIT: I was going to ask scherbakov.al or anyone else here if my '0,25 127,127' is the correct way to write this?

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

Hi MeDorian,

I usually just right-click the box and copy, then paste it, shows up like this:

Note-Off Velocity = [0, 127; 25, 127]

Hope that's what you meant.

The value of doing that, is that users can select/copy that line and right-click paste it straight into their note-off pane.

Lately, the note-off curve I'm using is this..

Note-Off Velocity = [0, 1, 66, 100, 127; 0, 32, 96, 127, 127]

It's a different dpiano and honestly could decided to get rid of the lowest zero when I have time to re-do it soon.

Note-off is one thing I rarely alter - but.. noticing just now, plenty of my curves could do with some alterations to note-off - thanks for the thread Melodialworks.

Thanks Qexl.

It was my computer typing skills lacking there.

Forgot to add, anyone finding the note-off difficult to understand, harpsichords are a good example to hear the release sound clearly.

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

Global Note-Off Velocity = [0, 127; 25, 127]
This is my setting.

Again thanks Qexl, had to try it, just the same as you explained.

With Pianoteq 7, Global note-off is better because before in version 6, changing this one parameter (freeze note-off) would show an edit in the pre-set name. This always bothered me but solved in Pianoteq 7.

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

Good observations Nick - that setting works on my dpiano quiet well.

Think/hope upcoming changes to revert some freeze panel behaviors will be flexible for prior vs. new use cases. Looking forward to seeing what comes from that.

I couldn't say I understand it - actually OK with default curve without needing a change from default - casually mostly adjust velocity and leave default note-off most of the time at least before editing something particular.

Keep a few saved note-off values I've come to by trial and error like the one posted.. I don't used global myself, although I love the option. If it helps anyone, instead I use curve as a final gilding for the frame around the whole final 'painting', saved per preset.

I'll post that one I did above again, but without that first zero for convenience.

As sherbakov.al mentions, Kawai can drop notes at that zero point.. have noticed it but instead of fixing it in the past, just thought of it as 'not pressing above 0' - all interesting to find little data points over the years! Thanks BTW scherbakov.al

Re: Kawai VCP1 NOTE-OFF curve recommendations

It is also possible to install VPCEditor. From the website:

http://www.kawaivpc.com/en/downloads/

Select the "Pianoteq" curve in the editor, and in the Pianoteq itself use Global Velocity = [0, 127; 0, 127].
(Well, and use the curve for "NoteOff" from the ones suggested above.)
It feels pretty realistic, especially for the new Steinway.
Also, if you wish, you can slightly edit the hardness of the hammers to your liking.
