Topic: Feature request : displaying long preset names

I like the Pianoteq interface in general - it's rather nicely laid out and I am loath to ask for changes.  However it would be nice to be able to see longer preset names easily.  Currently the interface chops off what tends to be the "interesting bits" of the name.

There are two possible ways to get around this :

(1)  Use the pop-up roll-over text that appears when you mouse over the existing preset name on the main UI.  Currently it rather redundantly tells you that it's displaying the preset name and some info on how A-B etc work.  It might be better to display the full preset name instead (or as well).  This involves the fewest changes to the UI layout.

... OR ...

(2) Move the name unto it's line on the interface so it has access to more width - the full interface width.  This means moving the group of icons for saving, preset swapping A-B etc. into a different line, but I think the benefits outweigh the increase in UI height this implies.

This topic has merit ... IMHO

I'm voting for option 1.

Hard work and guts!

Re: Feature request : displaying long preset names

I agree with the need. Looking at Steingraeberxxxyyydddeee etc as opposed to Steingraeberxxxyyydddfff etc causes me to go back and select the particular one I need rather than risk editing the wrong one. One I've used in the past reads SteingraeberConcertGrandES7MozartSampl in the preset list, which is already shorter than the whole: Sampl is the start of Samplicity and then the resonance setting of the Samplicity file, i.e. m&d which I was using at the time. On the UI it stops at the 'r' in Mozart. Getting rid of the redundant ES7 wouldn't eliminate the issue. Using abbreviations might help, but if, for instance Mozart was shortened to M, it could still be confusing for the m which is short for medium.  Not immediately, but months/years later, unless it's only one of very few? Yes, M and m are different but I frequently see lower case instead of upper case on the screen, because my typing is such that the shift key clearly gets released before the character key, I assume.

Sorry for the excessive length: stress caused by frustration at not being able to get food and an urgent need to get rid of it by venting. Sorry, please bear with me.

Version 7 perhaps?

Re: Feature request : displaying long preset names

Yeah I like those ideas sjgcit - probably would prefer #1 as well.

Not sure if this touches on your thoughts sandalholme (also good luck with supplies! It's pretty goofy here too - hoping everyone's OK)..

Alternative might be to filter off the pre-appended piano names (we already know what piano we loaded) in the existing slot (no rejig to space or popup).

For an example, from:

"J. Weimes Pianoforte - my tuning AAV"

to be just:

"my tuning AAV"

Hope that makes sense. If we make our own long names, we're prob already putting our interesting bits up front-ish, and a filter looking only for extant pre-appends won't touch our own unique stuff.

Re: Feature request : displaying long preset names

One thing that could help, and it's a bug in my opinion, is to redisplay the preset names correctly in its entirety when the preset manager is detached and stretched horizontally or shown full screen. Presently, a truncated preset name stays truncated with three dots at the end even with a wider name field. Only when you select a shortened name can you have its complete name displayed at the bottom.

Re: Feature request : displaying long preset names

About the first option I suggested (add the preset name to the mouse-over pop-up).  While I described this as the least change to the UI, keep in mind that that's only the smallest changed visually.  In terms of coding the second option (dedicating a completely separate line and full UI width to the preset name) is the easiest to implement.

Coding the pop-up may not even be practical depending on what UI library they use at Modartt.  Coding the separate line should be simple, but means the UI dimensions and layout will be slightly altered.

I like choice #1 - hover to see long names.
