Topic: Your favorite Instrument and Preset for Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1?

Hi Guys,

i started to practise one of my favorite piano pieces - Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1.

I wonder if any of you like this piece too and could recommend a PTeq Instrument, preset and / or setting that would suit it best.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Music was my first love. And it will be my last. Music of the future. And music of the past (John Miles)

Hi Pboy,
Nice that you like Satie’s music. One can always say that a sound is great or good in different ways for a music piece. And  pluses and minuses list can be found for an instrument. But it is always about your personal taste. And that makes things interesting. This piece is about ”slow and painful”, and has been used often for relaxation. So, my choice is Steingraeber Warm. I like this Gymnopedie 1 and used it in school for my pupils to listen to. Thank you for your question and hope you find the right instrument to your taste.

I second the recommendation of the Steingraeber for pieces such as Satie's Gymnopédie No 1. I recently learned the three Gymnopédies and all seven Gnossiennes. The instrument I liked best for all of them was the Steingraeber (I like the standard "Steingraeber E-272" preset for day-to-day practice). Gnossienne No. 3 sounds particularly beautiful on that instrument, I think. I agree that the "Steingraeber Warm" would also be a nice choice. The Steingraeber is my favorite PT acoustic piano overall, the Bechstein being my next favorite, and then the Steinway B. Good luck in your explorations of possible PT instruments for playing Satie.

I believe one of the Gymnopedies is playable in its entirety using the demonstration versions only.  the disabled notes are simply not played.
But I have no idea which one it is . . .

I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order

Re: Your favorite Instrument and Preset for Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1?

I played one of the Gnossienne a while ago.
I remember liking a slightly modified Pleyel Player preset with the mechanical noises turned up a bit, some dulling through the equalizer and a tad more than one bar for condition slider. I also used the Bluethner Intimate preset.
If you want something crazy outside Pianoteq, this might actually be a use case for the "Noire" VST (check it out on youtube, looks really fun and different but useful for minimal music)
