Topic: Yamaha Montage 8

I played a Yamaha Montage 8 for the first time yesterday. I'm not a synth guy. So, I'd never gone out of my way to seek one out. However, I found myself standing in front of one (with a piano bench.) So I tinkled the plastics for a minute. OMG! I was amazed at the pianistic action. I expected it to have a loud clickety-clackety light springy synth action. It absolutely did not. I wasn't quite on the level of my Kawai MP11SE. But! to my fingers, it was superior to every digital stage piano in the showroom... including a Yamaha CP88 and a Roland RD2000, both of which felt cheap by comparison.

Thoughts?

I liked RD-2000 more.

Hard work and guts!

Montage 8 has a very fine keybed. Roland Rd-2000 can be quite clunky.

My thoughts exactly. I expected the RD2000 to feel more like an acoustic piano but it was far from it. As to the Montage, I'm going to have to get my hands on another one to see if the first was just a fluke. Not only was the action quieter and more substantial, it also had some of the thing that my Kawai has where, by virtue of the long length of the keysticks, it feels like an acoustic grand when you play deep into the keys, i.e. it's not appreciably harder to sound a note very close to the fall-board than it is near the ends of the keys. I was duly impressed. I guess having made pianos for 119 years counts for something.

Re: Yamaha Montage 8

While costing about twice as much a Roland RD-2000, a Yamaha Montage 8 lacks support for MIDI High Resolution Velocity Prefix control change number eighty-eight (88).

Which has been supported by Pianoteq a number of years now!

Pianoteq 8 Studio Bundle, Pearl malletSTATION EM1, Roland (DRUM SOUND MODULE TD-30, HandSonic 10, AX-1), Akai EWI USB, Yamaha DIGITAL PIANO P-95, M-Audio STUDIOPHILE BX5, Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 DSP.
