Topic: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Hi, I have a Roland FP-30 DP connected via USB to my Dell XPS15 laptop running Pianoteq6 trial. Listening with Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones plugged into the laptop. I also have a Soundsblaster Omni external USB sound card.
I tried using the Asio4All 2 driver but anything Asio I choose causes too much latency, so I'm using the windows drivers.

No matter if I listen via the laptop or via the Omni the sounds I'm getting from Pianoteq6 don't sound impressive at all - the upper range is fairly decent but the lower range sounds tinny and fake.
I really like the FP30's built in piano sounds but would love more variation - hence trying the Pianoteq.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong - can anybody advise at all?

Many thanks

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Hi Scott,
I think you posted this also in Pianoworld and was advised to try here. The first thing to say is that Pianoteq tends to be a marmite/one mans meat is another mans poison type of sound. It does seem to polarise views. For this reason alone it may not be your cup of tea. Having said that, those who hear a ‘metallic  twang’ usually point to the mid and upper registers, not the lower notes. So it’s possible you do have an issue with the system you are using. I am not an expert on PC’s etc but one way forward would to try and listen to someone else’s pianoteq setup to see if you hear the same problem on that. At the very least it might help to point to a either system setup issue or taste. I do wish you good fortune in your research,

Paul H

Ps I notice you are using a closed back headphone make that are known to have a base boost. The advice of VST and Pianoteq users is for open backed headphones. Demoing a pair open backs might also make an important difference.

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Thankyou Paul for the info. I seem to be getting replies in the other forum as well which is great, best of both worlds
I mentioned in the other forum - are there any pieces/snippets available online where I could hear what pianoteq is supposed to sound like, then I could compare to mine and maybe pinpoint the diffs.
Cheers

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Listen to Pianoteq's own demos: https://www.pianoteq.com/listen_by_instrument . Most of them were recorded with the presets on the default settings (except where it says 'customized').

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Hi Scot,
You are most welcome and +1 for the above post. As you are probably aware, your sound issues are attracting the sample/pianoteq scrum over at Pianoworld which will no doubt complicate your task. Good luck,

Paul h

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

This may be a velocity issue.
Velocity setting have a huge impact on the sound.
So try different velocity presets or make your own calibration.
Sound should change notably then;

provided the demos from the PTQ homepage sound good.

Also, a good USB audio interface (e.g. Steinberg etc.) is highly recommended,
also make a great step in sound dynamics.

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

I have recently noticed the same thing when listening through headphones directly from the iMac jack and not using an interface. I need to find my interface that is in a moving box somewhere.

The bass/bass-mid range of the Steinway D sounds... Weird. Listening to Phil Best play his recordings on the PTQ website I can sort of hear that same sound but it is not as pronounced as much in that area of the sound. Using the same headphones and iMac I have tweaked the piano and mezzo sliders, velocity curve, EQ, and sound board settings. It does help tweaking it that way but my PTQ does not sound the same as the recordings up on PTQ that Phil made. We all know he has commented on this via a recent video he made how he does not really tweak PTQ at all. He just plays it with style.

My search will continue when I find my interface. Until then it is more important to me to keep playing piano!

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Have you tried any other piano software than pianoteq?

Maybe the speakers of your pRoland are not good for bass sounds from other devices, like if only the Roland onboard sounds had the sound adjusted to sound ok for bass. If it's that maybe a equalizer adjustment could help you, using the equalizer present on pianoteq.

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

+1 on trying different headphones -

I use Sennheiser HD-600 which I absolutely love -

I've tried a number of others, each of which altered the character of the sound in an unpleasant way to my ears...

deeply personal perception...

In my experience, the frequency response curve of a particular headphone influenced the sound more than other variables.

cheers

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

Thank you everyone, I'm gonna try the various suggestions and see where I get to.
One other question meantime - is the Audio Device Type setting purely for latency purposes or does it affect the actual sound. I get unplayable latency with Asio4All 2 and Windows (realtek), I downgraded the driver on the realtek to windows driver (High Definition Audio) and that's the only option that gives me no latency, but just wondered if that affects how good/bad Pianoteq sounds.
Cheers

Hi Hwystar,
Many thanks for the tip on using the piano and mezzo sliders. I have managed to subtly tailor many of the presets to my iLoud Micro-Monitor speakers and the sound is now significantly improved. A great tweak and a big thank you is in order.
Best Wishes,

Re: Why doesn't my Pianoteq sound good?

The choices you can make on how Pianoteq sounds is limitless. Then comes the problem of playing with knobs instead of keys. Just one more little tap...

Just tap it in. Just tap it in...
