Thanks to TCH16, I've discovered a wonderful pianist from russia named Anna Geniushene.
In her second round (Schumann - Debussy - Prokofiev) she played like a great story teller, with a lot of atmosphere and mystery and no harshness at all. She speaks directly to the heart (one of the best Prokofiev 8th sonata I've heard).

Andrei Gugnin was also one of my favourites since he was already one of the best contestants in 2015 in my opinion.
I loved every note he played in his two rounds (especially his Beethoven Waldstein Sonata in the first round).

As a fellow Frenchman I'm also really happy Alexandre Kantorow won the first prize and grand prix, I loved his Stravinsky Firebird Suite.
Overall I thought most piano contestants were playing at a higher level of musicality than in the previous competition in 2015.
But, that said, nothing has topped for me the life defining moment that was the discovery of Lucas Debargue in TCH15.
So even though I really love Daniil Trifonov, my personnal favourite will remain Lucas Debargue, probably for a long time.
And since you can still watch it online, here is his now mythical TCH15 second round (Medtner first sonata, Ravel Gaspard de la Nuit) :

Thank you all, I really enjoy this competition - great format and yes, definitely noticed much in the way of exceptionally confident and gracious performances by so many. So good to see/hear. Future is in good hands it seems, in classical music.
I'm taking some time for more tomorrow - thank you for those links Soel, really appreciate following up your observations and looking forward to some more enjoyable music.
Didn't come across that Shigeru Kawaii somehow Gilles, but would you happen to still have a link?

It's used by Kantorow in the two first rounds of the competition linked by scherbakov.al in the first post. For the concerto round he used a Steinway...

I agree, we are very lucky to be able to witness these new generations of incredibly talented musicians.
If you like the cello, I would also recommand watching Anastasia Kobekina who won third prize in TCH16.
The first note she hit in her first round I was instantly struck by her natural confidence and then blown away by her whole performance.
She plays Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata magnificently in her second round.

Great performance - she plays like Valentina. Also my own playing has gained a higher tier - in my own thinking. I now play more like I do than I ever did ... ;p). I make more facial grimises when I play than Anna. I play like I do now more than she does.
