Topic: Studiologic SL 990 Pro

Hi all!

I've just bought an old Studiolpgic SL 990 Pro which I can't wait to play!

From the manual, it seems that I just need a simple Midi-to-USB cable to then set up Painoteq.

Currently, on both Mac and Windows 10, the USB device is recognised, but no signal is coming from the midi controller. Even with the midi controller not connected, the USB device is 'recognised.'

My question is this:

Can I simply use a Midi-to-USB cable from the keyboard to laptop, or do I require a device in between both for this to work.

Many Thanks in advance for your help!

Ali

Re: Studiologic SL 990 Pro

Hi, there are a few things you might mean here, so first idea - check that your midi plugs are the right way around (swap them - try plugging the end if labelled "midi in" into the keyboard's "midi out" - and the other plug into the keyboard's "Midi thru".. afaik that should work if you have that kind of midi end plugs.

If you have USB square end in keyboard to normal USB into PCs - that could be something else. In my setup which 'should' work, this kind of plug fails on my main audio machine. So the old midi plug to USB adapter fixed that (old midi plugs give me great latency with an external audio device, food for thought maybe).

If the plugs are good, and it's more about something onboard, if your PCs have audio they should be able to work with Pianoteq unless something really rare is up.

You could get an external audio unit for better quality if you want or require - totally up to you.

Try this page:

How to connect a keyboard to a computer

There's also the section

Getting started: setting up your hardware also on the main website.

Next, I'd suggest checking the manual near the beginning - there's some setup info, including things like info about installing the ASIO4all audio driver which, while not always necessary, is recommended if you don't use other audio drivers (like ones which might come with an external audio unit).

Lastly, if all else fails, try back here with a bit more info or

contact Pianoteq support if it doesn't look like any of the above works.

Good luck - it's an excellent thing when you finally put the pieces together and hear those first notes

Check that midi plugs are the correct way around
Already done

USB square end in keyboard
There isn't a USB connection to the keyboard, only Midi. What type of adapter are you talking about? URL example?

PC audio issues
I don't think this is the case

External audio unit
I think this may the next step. What am I specifically looking for?

How to connect a keyboard to a computer
Currently trying 'using internal soundcard' but think it may be time to try 'external audio device'

Thanks for your help!

The type I'm thinking of here is in the case that your midi to USB is not a one piece cable. You can take an old midi cable (midi at both ends) and get an adapter which gives you a USB end.

I mentioned that above, because I replaced my midi to usb one piece with it - in my case, my PC (for whatever reason) doesn't "handle" the one piece cable properly. I suspect, these carry whatever extra data (like they may be 'audio-ready' or have audio functionality built it).

It's maybe a rare fix - but one that's worth tyring it having trouble with cables which are "supposed to" work

Best to recommend you try a web search for usb to midi adapter - or if you go to a favourite music store, go in and buy one off the shelf. Usually can get them cheaper in store than online lately - from like $10 to $50 USD. Mine have been ~$15 and PWO.

I'd only be giving you a brand name or a link to a supplier - there are seemingly millions of the things

Lastly, external audio unit, as above, I'd recommend searching for it (the forum will have loads of threads about 'best' external units) and a web search. Don't just take a single recommendation - but Focusrite Scarlett iirc? seems to be popular with others here. Unless you really know you need/want or can even run higher spec units, it's probably fine to stick to low or mid point units. You should be more than happy with 48,000hz audio - you don't need to pay for higher, if you don't have a professional need for that.

Maybe some others have some favourites or new ones they've found. I'm happy with an M-Audio M-Track (at 48 kHz) - my sound card runs 44.1 kHz - unless I want to edit in higher res, this is fine for playing and most recording. BTW, your Pianoteq is capable of exporting to higher resolution audio even if your audio devices are only capable of 'interpreting' it via some digital audio conversion. Just an add on which may be helpful.

Best of luck with your search - I'd lastly recommend that visit to a music store so you can see these things working. Even if you take in your lappy.
