Topic: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

Just last week I was using Apple GarageBand 10.2 with Pianoteq 6.1.1 and everything was fine. But Apple just released Garageband 10.3.0, and Pianoteq just released 6.2.1, and suddenly GarageBand reports that the Pianoteq AU plugin cannot be loaded and cannot be used with my projects.

Garageband gives the following error message:

"Audio Unit plug-in can't be used

The Audio Unit "Pianoteq 6" could not be loaded for your project, and may need to be updated. Contact the manufacturer for an updated version or further assistance."

If somebody from Modarrt will contact me, I will try to troubleshoot this with you.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

I have done some troubleshooting and the problem is definitely with Apple GarageBand 10.3.0.

I reverted to Apple GarageBand 10.2.0 and now Pianoteq 6.2.1 works correctly in my GarageBand projects.

I checked with a couple of other apps that use Apple AU rather than VST, and they work correctly with Pianoteq 6.2.1.

However, since Apple GarageBand is a core program that is considered part of Apple macOS, I suggest that Modarrt might want to check with Apple and investigate what caused this incompatibility.

In the meantime I will not use Apple GarageBand 10.3.0.

Try deleting the AU cache then reboot.

/Users/[USER]/Library/Caches/AudioUnitCache/com.apple.audiounits.cache

Hard work and guts!

Yes, that is the first thing I tried. I deleted the cache and rebooted. But this did not help. After GarageBand 10.3 rebuilt the cache by scanning all of my dozens of AU plugins and instruments, it still gave the same error message and refused to load Pianoteq 6.2.1.

Meanwhile MainStage 3.3.2 (which has not received a recent update) could still work with Pianoteq 6.2.1 with no problem, and Sibelius 8.5 could also load and use the AU version of Pianoteq 6.2.1. I also ran MainStage's AU plugin validation utility, which went through all my AU plugins and instruments and reported that Pianoteq 6.2.1 passes its validation tests.

When I restored GarageBand 10.2 from an offline backup, GarageBand 10.2 could load and use Pianoteq with no problems.

So clearly this is a bug in GarageBand 10.3.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

I get the same message.  And it's not just Pianoteq.  None of my third party audio unit instruments will load into GarageBand.  But they all work in Logic and MainStage.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

BTW, the first time I tried to load an Audio Unit instrument after installing this version of GarageBand, I got a message that said I needed to reduce the security to use this instrument.  Do you want to do that?  I clicked OK, and then I received the other message.  So it's likely some kind of new sand-boxing thing going on with GarageBand.

Yes, I got the same message, and I indicated that I wanted to reduce security, with the same result.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

I have no problem with Garageband 10.3.0 and Ptq 6.2.1  using Mac mini late -14. I had to reduce the security (have done it before, always working). Can it have something to do with different models of computers? This is my third Mac mini, always working.
Well, that’s what I think about it.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

I think there is an issue which happens only on macOS 10.13 -- Older versions of macOS have no problem with Garageband 10.3.

I can't get any AU synth to load in Garageband 10.3 on high Sierra, so I guess this is an Apple issue.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

lwagner7777@gmail.com has just informed me that Apple has released GarageBand 10.3.1 specifically to correct this problem with third-party AUs not loading.

I downloaded it and it seems to work correctly with Pianoteq 6.2.1.

It seems it is still necessary to click on the "Lower system security" dialog box the first time you load Pianoteq.

Re: Apple GarageBand 10.3.0 will not load Pianoteq 6.2.1

In GB 10.3.1 I can't find the midi loops any more. I reinstalled GB, loaded the sound library, reinstalled the sound library. But I can't find the midi loops. Are they really removed or is there a filter which keeps active even after reinstallation?

In my Loop library there are maybe 20 midi loops left. Total loop objects are counted as 8219.

This is the solution
