Topic: A Christmas Star

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpCVT-whVRg

My video is a recording of a Christmas song composed by my sister years ago for her kindergarten class. I adapted it for piano and play it on the 1922 Erard piano in version 6. The preset is a modified recording preset with mic positions and reverb based on Recording 3 from the Steingraeber set. Everything is done within the Pianoteq software. My Erard is tuned at A=432, John Ellis (1875) temperament, which is very comfortable on my ears.

Don't know how to master audio to sound good on computer/cellphone speakers but through headphones the sound seems fine on my setup.

Wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season!

Robert

Re: A Christmas Star

Thanks for this heartwarming song and playing. I think Erard is a good choice for this song.
Wishing a peaceful holiday season to you, too!

Re: A Christmas Star

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts. They're much appreciated.

Yes, I agree with you about the Erard for this song. The 1922 Erard is my favorite of all the Pianoteq models and being able to play it was my sole reason for first purchasing Pianoteq way back in 2007. There's something special about the modeling for this Erard. When I play it I get the sense that the Modartt team has a deep affection, even love, for the owner and that comes through with every note played.

I wish you as well a joyous and peaceful holiday season!

My warmest wishes to you and your family and friends,
Robert

Re: A Christmas Star

How lovely to hear the 1922 Erard - definitely one of the hidden treasures of Pianoteq. Interesting to hear what you did with the mic settings. I'm always keen to try alternative tunings (fan of Hummel and Hummel2!) so I will investigate John Ellis 1875.

Re: A Christmas Star

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed hearing it.

Hidden treasure is a great way to put it! I found that the default mic settings for the 1922 Erard don't work as well on my setup but the Steingraeber ones do. Sometimes they need a little tweaking. For the Recording 3 mic perspective I boosted the gain to +3 in the Effects panel for a fuller overall tone. When using the mics from the Steingraeber model, I only use the mic placements, the Delay and Reverb panels in the Effects panel. No EQ curves.

I tried mic settings from the Grotrian, Bluethner, and Petrof models but got the best results from the Steingraeber model.
But you might want to try some of the others. They might work as well or even better on your setup.

I like experimenting, too, with temperaments and will try the ones you suggest. Sometimes I use Pyle 1906 for the Erard and it works well.

Take care!
Robert
