Topic: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

Hi,

I just bought Pianoteq Stage today.

When I load a preset from fxp corner, into Pianoteq Stage, I  understand (and it tells me so) that some advanced parameters can't be loaded. But does it load the basic mic positions from the preset - or is it a "default" mic and position for the Stage version?

I'll probably upgrade to Standard at some point, but I really don't feel the need to endlessly tweak all the parameters that are available.

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

Stage version only loads parameters that you can see on the interface of Stage. Any others are discarded.

Hard work and guts!

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

Hi ED,

So, what does "Stage" do about mic and mic positions?
Does it use a "default" setup for everything?
Or maybe each model has a default setup?
And then Stage just uses eq and FX to change things?

Sorry for all the questions - I'm just getting my head around how things work here

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

I'm pretty sure that, if an fxp is loaded into Stage, the mic positions will revert to the default settings for the preset which was used as a starting point for the fxp (for example, 'Steinway D Home') - no matter how much those settings have been altered.

Of course, the beauty of Pianoteq is that you can try things in demo. Install the demo of Standard and load an fxp, such as Don Smith's 'Steinway Grand D - general 01' or Nathan Shirley's 'Steinway D (distant 6.2.1)'. Then load the same fxp into Stage and hear the difference. You can try moving the mics yourself, and I think you can even save your own fxps from the demo as well.

But you'll be missing out as some keys won't play. Best to get Standard if you want to run every (Pro) fxp.

Well yes, of course with the demo you'll have that note restriction and 20-minute limit - but at least you get to try out all the features before you buy!

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

Thanks guys.
I'm sure I'll move up to Standard at some point. I was just wondering if the Stage presets had mic positions "baked in" or not

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

OK - I broke down and upgraded to Standard ;-)
The mics can change the sound a lot - but I'll have to be careful. Maybe i'll make some mic presets based on th eones that are already there.
It looks like I'll have to get the manual out again
I don't think I'll touch too much of the other stuff

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

Hi jbraner,

nice to see that you upgraded so you can work on microphone placement.

A recent thread exists on this forum with some info about just this kind of thing. I highly recommend anyone interested and new to mic placement to check out at least a few of the links at this posting - I short-listed some of my favourite bookmarks I knew of.

Microphone placement

The first, goes to a helpful interactive page, choose settings, see it before you try it, refer back etc. Others give some diagrams, then some deeper examination of acoustics and so on.

That small group of links are certainly not the last word, merely the beginning - but oh man, do I wish I had such good info when I was beginning.

By learning some solid basics, you'll save yourself maybe years of regrettable issues - or at least accelerate your refinement of settings.

Sincerely, best of luck to you - enjoy your Pianoteq journey!

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

Thanks for the link Qexl.

I've been looking through this forum and taking a note of things. I'm going to get started today
I don't want to go nuts - I just want to be able to tweak some of the presets. Once I get familiar with a few things, I'm sure I'll just use a few "go to" presets (with small variations) most of the time.

I'd seen the thread you're referring to - but was having trouble finding it again - so thanks again for the link!

Re: Does Stage load the actual mic positions from fxp presets?

UPDATE:

I've been palying around with mic placements and this is really good!
It's a little bit pricey - but I'm glad I upgraded to Standard. I haven't done anything outrageous - just take some presets that I like and change microphones and/or adjust the position just  a little bit. It really gives you some nice variations on your preset - then you can always tweak as needed for a particular song or mix or whatever.

Thanks again to Qexl and everyone on the forum for helping me get started - this is going to be interesting.

FYI - I just picked up the Embertone Steinway Kontakt instrument a few weekes ago - an dthat is *very* nice. Pianoteq is just as nice (now that I have a little more control) and you get the different pianos - so nice variation.
