Topic: Piano Video: Ray Charles on a well-mic'ed grand

Another one. Willie Nelson and Ray Charles singing "Seven Spanish Angels." Taking a break from Chopin. Great rock piano sound, to me. (If you can say that a piano has a rock sound when most of the people in the band are wearing Stetsons.) Hard hammers and close mics, but the chords come through cleanly in those middle octaves. Around 1:30, you can see that one mic seems to be inches from the strings.

The piano sound comes out MUCH better if you download the file using RealPlayer. A lot more presence:

(Once installed, RealPlayer, while you watch YouTube videos, pops up a button asking if you want to download the file, which in this case is an flv. Using the Applian flv player--I was surprised by how much better the sound is, playing the file after downloading it.)

I can´t se this in my country, Sweden..

Re: Piano Video: Ray Charles on a well-mic'ed grand

Hm...Did you try searching in Google or another search engine? It appears to be popular. There's one version that starts at the rehearsal, and has worse sound on the piano--maybe some artificial reverb.

(I posted the link as a reference for piano sounds. Worries me what someone from Sweden would think of this video...)

Re: Piano Video: Ray Charles on a well-mic'ed grand

Is that low mic that's visible in the foreground at around 1:30 over the strings, or over the harp?

Doesn't work for me in Australia either, but this one does:

Here's an iTunes link, although I don't think it's the same recording (and the piano sounds subdued compared to the YouTube clip):

None of the links work for me.

This video is blocked in your country.

Or:

This video is no longer available in your country.

Skip: This clip is blocked for me here in the US, so I can't tell if it's the same one. The one I posted starts with Nelson introducing the song by saying "Let's do 'Seven Spanish Angels,' " to Charles, and then telling the audience that Charles brought the song down to the studio the other day. But if there's a lot of room in the sound, then the video is the same, but the sound isn't as good. See below,

Glenn: It looks as though the international rights issues are still being sorted out.

The sound quality on this one is much lower (sounds as though it was mic'ed from the back of the hall, and that destroys the piano), but it's fom the newish Veoh site, which is sponsored by the labels, so it may work:

On the better one, you can really hear the sound coming from that mic that's almost lying on the piano--those chords are pretty loud, and have a lot of clear presence. I'm getting a similar sound in PTeq putting the binaural head down a little lower than the top edge of the rim in the same general area as that mic.  But I don't sound like Ray Charles...

Go here for the version with better sound:

If the link doesn't take you directly to the video, go to the dotsub.com site and search for the video named Close mic'ed piano .

Don't know how long it will stay there.
