Topic: "Harmonic Series"

This is a piece which will join over 100 others to form a new piano method book I'm working on. It incorporates the harmonic series and the 'acoustic scale' which is derived from it. If you'd like to try your hand at this, I'm offering it as a sample at no cost -- it's available here for a couple weeks: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jRTZJ0...sp=sharing

This recording was made entirely with Pianoteq. I adjusted the Steinway D to replicate a typical classical recording sound, mics at a bit of a distance. If anyone's interested in this preset I'll be glad to post it. 6.1 really shines with the upgraded reverb system.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Very nice, sweet, and gymnopedic   I could glimpse Satie around the corner...

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Thanks, and yes, this was definitely a nod to Satie.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Thanks for the PDF upload! And yes please, I would like the fxp that you prepared for this. Not being a fan of 'head stuck inside the piano lid' style recording, I very much appreciated your previous 'distant mic' fxps.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Very nice video and audio Nathan. Compositions are super.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Thanks Lanny.

dazric: I've just uploaded the FXP file I used for this. With version 6.1 they seem to have overhauled the reverb/acoustic space system in Pianoteq. This was a vast improvement, but it meant my old distant mic FXPs didn't translate at all. I was glad to rework it since the new Pianoteq system sounds so good right out of the box. If you freeze the mic and reverb settings in this FXP it should serve as a good base to start with when trying to achieve a more classical piano recording style with other Pianoteq instruments.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Excellent, thanks, I look forward to trying your new fxp and will certainly experiment with freezing the mic setting to apply to other instruments. 6.1 is indeed a vast improvement, and I have found myself going back to basics on many of my presets - as you say, a lot of the old settings don't seem to quite work in the new environment.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

That sounds great, Nathan.  And the visual of the score as you play it is pretty neat to look at, as well.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Thanks dklein,

dazric, also be sure to freeze the reverb settings. The current version of Pianoteq behaves entirely different when you use distant mics and then turn off reverb completely (as I used to do to add a 3rd party reverb). Now the reverb and mic placement seem to be directly linked, so if you turn reverb off it sounds like suddenly you're back with your head in the piano.

It could be this better replicates actual physics -- I wouldn't know since I've never listened to a piano at a distance inside a giant anechoic chamber! If you do want to use a 3rd party reverb with a distant mic setup I've not yet figured out a good way to achieve this. But for now I'm happy since the built-in reverb is so much improved.

Re: "Harmonic Series"

Thanks Nathan, interesting and useful info about the reverb. I had an imported IR that I was using for some of my presets, but when 6.1 came along it somehow didn't sound so good any more, so I reverted back to the internal reverb settings - fortunately the native reverb is now so good that I don't mind! In 6.1 I haven't yet felt the need for an external reverb, but when an occasion arises I will play around with a few different presets to see what works best.
