Topic: Controlling effects with midi on specific preset

I want to control a parameter on an effect by the wheel (controller 1) on my keyboard. However, I only want to do that on a particular preset (controlling the amount of distortion on the distorted Rhodes)

My problem is that if I assign the midi signal from controller 1 to handle the first parameter of effect 3, then it will work when I play the distorted Rhodes. But if I play another preset, then I do not want the wheel to affect the mix setting of Effect 3.

Is there any way I can aviod that, by filtering or preset configuration or other suggestions?

I considered using different midi channels, but then I have the problem that I will have to set the Note midi channel to Any - and then I have an issue with the connected Organ module, because then the piano will play when I want to play the organ (both controlled from my Fatar Studiologic SL990).

The ideal solution for me would be the ability to make a preset with the midi configuration as part of the preset, instead of the midi controls being global settings that affects all presets. I think. Other solutions and suggestions are most welcome.

Came to think of an alternative solution (which is a suggestion for a new feature in PianoTeq): will it be possible to change the midi-channel-selector for notes to be a multi-select-list? I.e. instead of having "Any, 1, 2, 3, ... , 16" there would be a list of 1 - 16 with checkboxes, and then you could mark the channels you would want PianoTeq to listen to. Then "Select all" would match the current "Any" selection.

The reason is that it would allow me to set up two (or more) different setups for my keyboard, and then I could have one for playing piano, another for Rhodes, e.g. that I want to use the pitch bend and the wheel on my keyboard for controlling various effects, but I do not want these controls to accidentally affect anything when I play piano. Also I could switch between using my volume pedal as either volume or wah-wah. Just to give examples.

I am not aware how difficult this would be, and I do not know if I am the only one that would be able to take advantage of that setting.

What you can do is create a midimapping suited for rhodes , where the mod wheel controls the distortion, save it, and 'attach it' to the rhodes preset that you want to use with it (and then save that preset). Each time you will load that preset, the midimapping will be loaded at the same time and will allow you to use the mod wheel.

You will find the 'attach to current preset' command in the menu button of the options / midimappings dialog

Thank you so much for a prompt reply, and it sounds like the right thing to try. I actually looked at that feature and wondered how it worked, but could not find any information in the manual.

I assume that when I load a new midi mapping it overwrites the current mapping, i.e. I will have to have a piano preset in my Rhodes midi mapping file, and have that piano preset reload the old midi mapping file. Right?

If you attach the MIDI mapping to a preset, it will only be valid for that preset. For any other presets not having any MIDI mappings attached, a default MIDI mapping (the one which you set as default) will be used.

Worked like a charm, thanks for all the help. If anybody stumbles upon this thread and need more information, then basically what I did was:

a) Created the two different midi mappings I wanted to use (Options --> Midi). Both midi mappings had all the Program Change commands assigned to the presets I wanted them to control, e.g. PC01 for Piano, PC02 normal Rhodes, PC03 distorted Rhodes.

b) Select the instruments/presets I wanted to use. For each preset I did:
      b1) Make sure I had selected the midi mapping I wanted to use for that preset.
      b2) Tweak the preset to my likings (effects, ... ).
      b3) Go into Options --> Midi --> Midi mapping, and select "Attach to current preset"
      b4) Save the preset (do not forget this !! ), this is the diskette icon (does anybody know what a diskette is these days?). Be aware that if you have worked on a standard preset, then you will be asked to save it under a new name. No issues in this.

The reason for having all the Program Change mappings in both midi mappings is that I wanted to be able to switch to any instrument at any given time. You may want to just have one mapping in the "Distorted" mapping, which you can use to reload the original midi mapping.

That is all there is to it.
