Topic: Sometimes experiencing muted notes with Kawai VPC1 keyboard

I have this problem when playing my Kawai VPC1 keyboard that notes are sometimes muted. It happens only sporadically, in my most active periods maybe once a day. I am using Pianoteq 5.1.3 64-bit within Ableton Live 9.1.6 on Windows 8.1. Let me know if I should provide more info.

Has anyone here experienced this sort of problem before? Is it likely that the problem is within the keyboard itself, or do you think it's software-related? I'm currently in touch with Kawai through their Norwegian distributor to try to find a solution.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Could you have calibrated a velocity curve with a zero (or one) midi level?

It's easy to check: just try another keyboard or another software.

Combine velocity curves: http://output.jsbin.com/cukeme/9

Hm, may be worth checking, but I've used the standard included velocity curve for Pianoteq.

Edit: Come to think of it, I doubt this could be the case, as I've had it happen that whole chords are muted?

I wish it were easy to check. However, like I said, it happens only spuriously, typically once a day if I'm "lucky" or very active rather. I did use Reaper instead of Ableton for a while, and during that period I didn't notice any issues. However, after switching back to Ableton it took a while before I noticed the issue again, probably because I switched to rehearsing a piece which I'm much less proficient with than the previous one (therefore playing really slowly).

If I were to try another keyboard, I'd have to keep it for some time, as per my explanation above. It's anything but simple in my experience so far.

Re: Sometimes experiencing muted notes with Kawai VPC1 keyboard

Have any of you guys had concrete experiences with this sort of problem in the past though? Did it arise from software (Pianoteq, host software) or from your keyboard?

Oh, and merry Christmas

Try to uncheck the "CPU Overload detection" from the "Perf" section in the Options. Or just set the sample rate lower.

Re: Sometimes experiencing muted notes with Kawai VPC1 keyboard

I'm just speculating, but maybe you have a heavy CPU load in this "second". In case you have checked "CPU Overload Detection" in the Options/Perf. the software might drop one oder more notes in order to recover.

Maybe you should try with less polyphony or more samples. Again just an idea.

Thanks guys, the CPU thing *might* be it. What happens if CPU Overload Detection is disabled in case of overload?

To answer my own question, I guess there would be glitches.

Re: Sometimes experiencing muted notes with Kawai VPC1 keyboard

Well done, the both of you I can't tell for sure yet, but it does appear a very likely culprit.

Re: Sometimes experiencing muted notes with Kawai VPC1 keyboard

Yes, that's nice )) From my experience, I played with some high sampling rate settings, though I've got a Stage version you can set the high sampling rate on the hardware side anyway. I was thinking about maybe getting a bit less latency theoretically. And I've got that note drops with this higher rates. Disabling the Overload detection solved the mutes and I was not able to notice any drawbacks from that.

@thono2007 - I notice from your signature that you still did not get a Bluethner - please get it, you'll not regret )))

Thank you
I'm using the D4 with Rachels latest preset fro the most of them and I like it very much. I tested Bluether before I bought Pianoteq. Never used it since then. I agree, I have to retest it - and the BUY
I just started playing piano in February this year. So I'm really not a good performer, but improving so maybe a good idea to think about using different models for my playing.
