Topic: Sharing Microphone Setups

Hello everyone..
I wanted to know if there's a way of sharing microphone setups, and what if we had like the fxp corner, but with mic placement.
I was reading about how to mic different pianos. For now I am interested in mic'ing an upright piano.
There are several "techniques" and each of has a sonically different sound.
So I was wondering:
1. What if we could get pro mic placements. Either as built-in presets, or as "sharable" ones
2. Say I want to place 2 microphones 2 feet apart (60 cm). There is the coordinates settings in PT, but I guess having a measurement/ comparison tool would highly help.
3. A "zoomable" area so we could really see the piano and the placements
4. This one applies  for the Upright only: On the right side, the upright has the lid open and we can see the interior of the piano. It might be not that important, but is it that the piano is completely open, or is the lid the only one.

On a side note, would love to hear about your favorite microphones, and which ones do you use and why.

it will cost you nothing to dream, and everything not to..

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

I'm sure you could upload their '.mfxp' files in the [Other files] section. This should also apply to other settings that you could save. i.e Everything in the [Effects] panel: Reverb, Delay; Amp; Comp; etc.

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

I looked for some, and found none
did anyone try to find a correlation between coordinates and measurements?

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

one more question though.. Do we have phase issues with PT?

I'd say yes, we do... everytime I play around with the mics placement I have to go in the editor and correct the notes that have now strange partials popping out because of phase shifts... It's a very interesting subject

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

here are some of my favorites, if you want to try them

www.robertosoggetti.com/mfxp.rar

You'll need to adjust the fine positioning for every piano preset, at least that's what I do...

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

excuse my ignorance Rob, but how can I load these mfxps?
and thanks a lot for sharing

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

You're welcome, Edmond!
I think you just have to put them in Documents/Pianoteq/Presets/My Presets and you should see them from within Pianoteq, in the mic placement page...

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

I'll check them tonight where I actually have the full version of PT.. it is not showing on my demo version in here.. again thanks a lot..

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

Hey good idea, I realized how much the sound comes alive when you use 5 mics, no delay and level compensation. It sounds so much more present, like playing a real grand... Lovely.

That's true, I realized too how more "3d" the sound is with no compensation... Still we have to watch for phasing issues though...

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

Here is a video I made, comparing a patch I made in version 4 which took like a year of tweaking and now comes number 5 and I can do it all over again?

Re: Sharing Microphone Setups

That's the price of improvements in quality of Pianoteq's modeling

This is also the reason why newer versions of Pianoteq never overwrite the older versions, so you can use v4 and v5 side by side - v5 for new and better sounds, v4 for your old DAW projects.
